This study is designed to investigate how over 15 years experienced three Korean middle school art teachers perceive and understand meanings of “professionalism of art teacher.” In previous studies, it has been attempted to find and reconfirm absolute knowledge on “professionalism of art teacher” but, instead, in this study, it is tried to reconstruct meaning of it as “contextual knowledge” using a phenomenological research method. As a result of analyzing three teachers narratives on their thinking and understanding of “professionalism of art teacher”, 13 themes such as “educated as a pre-service art teacher”; various art-making experiences, learning of educational theories, good quality of teaching practicum experience, active seeking of reasons of changes of current middle school students' attitude, finding of barrier factors for in-depth understanding of students, facing reality alone, escaping from isolation, meeting with good persons, having good educational spaces, troubleshooting ability, being an art teacher as an educator not as an artist, not being tired were found. These themes were organized as five categories: (1)rich preservice education, (2)ability of understanding students, (3)standing on one's own bravely, (3)effective environment, and (5)passion. In this study, it was found that three art teachers perceived “professionalism of art teacher” more realistically and contextually and it was different from as defined in theories.
