Risk assessment in youth treatment

By Jaana Koskela

Abstract

Practical work in institution involves continuous risk assessments and decision making in anticipation of possible actions. This study aims to examine which concepts and reasoning staff, at two treatment centers, employ regarding risks and risk assessments and also which decision strategies are applied. Furthermore, differences in assessment from a gender perspective are also examined. Qualitative method is applied and twelve interviews were conducted. The results show that the subjects of risk and risk assessment are understood as multidimensional concepts which comprise all aspects of daily work. However, differences are found between individuals influenced by knowledge, experience and personality. Risk factors are primarily apportioned in relation to violence, risks of both material and human nature and psychological ill-health. Gender differences are distinguished in mode of expression about girls and boys. Finally, the results show that decision making, which principally takes place through dialogue, consensus and formal decision making, could be affected by biases
