Development of a knowledge-based system for balancing complex mixed model assembly lines

Abstract

Paced flow lines are commonly used in the manufacture of mass produced goods. Balancing of complex lines, as found in the final assembly tracks of the motor industry, is a manual and very time consuming task which makes it difficult to react quickly to changes in market demand for product volume/mix. An industrial engineer develops the balance based on his knowledge of the product and processes, taking account of technological constraints and business objectives; undocumented heuristic procedures based on experience are used to produce an efficient allocation of manpower in the line. This paper describes the development of a knowledge-based system, which has been shown to produce efficient balances. It incorporates complex features that are not considered in current approaches found in research literature
