Web_Soc:Socratic-based Collaborative Learning on Recursion Programming, Computers & Education

[[abstract]]In this study, a recursion programming learning system - Web_Soc – was implemented in the world wide web. Many learning environments bulit in the WWW adapted an asynchronous type of interactions for users, yet we implemented the Socratic dialogue strategy into Web_Soc and built a collaborative learning environment for synchronous and asynchronous interaction, and a Socratic-dialogue based tutoring system for individual learning. To test the application effect of Web_Soc, seventy-two students were randomly assigned to Web_Soc collaborative learning group, Web_Soc individual learning group, and studying by reading (control) group. The experimental results showed that for high programming ability students, there were no significant learning differences among the three groups, yet for the low programming ability students, both the learning effects of Web_Soc collaborative and individual learning was significantly better than those of control group.
