Lane Marks Detection Using Steerable Filters

Abstract

[[abstract]]While applying image processing techniques to extract information from vision based traffic monitoring system, it usually requires detecting road area beforehand in order to focus on the region interested. To be more specific, the positions of lane marks often play an important role in road area detection. In this paper, an algorithm to detect lane marks based on applying steerable filters techniques is presented. This algorithm can locate the lane marks accurately and also calculate their extending direction. The extending directions are very helpful to determine the vanishing point of the road, which is important information required in some applications such as 3D model matching, vehicle tracking directions, and etc. The experiments under different weather conditions show that the proposed lane marks detection algorithm is robust for many kinds of traffic scenes.
