[[abstract]]The Effect of Aerobic Training on the Physical Symptoms and Sleep Quality of Climacteric Women Master,s Thesis,2005 Chy-wei Chen Advisor: Chin-lung Fang, Ph.D. ABSTRACT The purposes of this study were to investigate the effect of 24 weeks aerobic training on the physical symptoms and sleep quality of climacteric women, and to understand the situation and relationship between the physical symptoms and sleep quality. The subjects were 34 climacteric women of 45 to 55 years olds (M=49.91 years, SD=3 years) at the stages of natural menopause (M=49.83 years, SD=2.56 years). The exercise training contained 3 times a week, 50 to 60 minutes each session and lasted for 24 weeks. Each session was consisted of 5-10 minutes warming up, 30-40 minutes aerobic exercise, and 5-10 minutes cool down. The intensity of aerobic exercise was low to moderate, about 55-75% maximal heart rate. The Greene Climacteric Scale and Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index were used to evaluate physical symptoms and sleep quality respectively before and after training program. The physical symptoms ranged from 0 to 11 points and the average was 3.35±2.68. The sleep quality ranged from 0 to 13 points and the average was 5.44±2.71 and 38.2% of them had bad sleep quality (PSQI>5). The collected data were analyzed by Independent t test, one-way ANOVA and Pearson’s product-moment correlation, the significant level was α =.05. The results of this study were as followed: 1.Different menopause stages of climacteric women had significant difference on the physical symptoms (P<.05). There were more disturbances of the physical symptoms during the post-menopause than that of the pre-menopause, and more disturbances during the peri-menopause than that of pre-menopause. Moreover, the physical symptoms of the post-menopause was significantly higher than that of the pre-menopause (P<.05). 2.The body symptoms and the physical symptoms of climacteric women had significant positive correlation with subjective recognition of sleep quality and sleep disturbances (P<.05). 3.The physical symptoms was significantly improved (P<.05) after 24 weeks of training. In addition, the whole sleep quality, the subjective recognition of sleep quality, the sleep incubation period, sleep hours, sleep efficiency, sleep disturbances and day function limitation were significantly improved (P<.05). 24 weeks of aerobic training had improved the physical symptoms and sleep quality of climacteric women.
