Cuts and Loops as Musical Movement and Interaction

Abstract

Many studies of electronic dance music encounter various problems in their approach. Sociological approaches focus on the social aspects, and often neglect the musical aspects. Structural approaches seem to neglect the aspect of social interaction, which is clearly evident in EDM events. This paper analyses the problems these approaches encounter, and suggests an enactivist approach towards EDM, in which the social dimension is interwoven with the musical dimension. The musical inner space meshes with the physical musical outer space. This interaction shapes our experience of the music.
