∆3-1,3,4-thiadiazolines were found by Kellogg and coworkers to eliminate thermally nitrogen to give a thiocarbonyl ylide. Some aspects of the thermal reaction could be related to the theory of Woodward and Hoffmann. It was of interest to investigate the photochemical behaviour of ∆3-1,3,4-thiadiazolines.
