Compound geohazards : planning for environmental change

By Kathryn Booth

Abstract

This research sets out to determine the potential effects of\ud climate change on geohazards in the UK and focuses on one\ud of the foremost natural hazards affecting the UK — flooding.\ud In addition to the immediate effects of flooding, areas\ud that are prone to flooding could suffer further problems,\ud accentuating factors such as subsidence and heave (due\ud to the shrink-swell of clays) and reactivation of landslides.\ud The geohazards within these potential flood zones will be\ud heightened as a result. With this in mind, this research\ud focuses on the potential effects of surface-water flooding\ud (initially using the BGS Geological Indicators of Flooding\ud dataset) on natural geohazards in the UK (as represented by\ud BGS GeoSure layers)
