Abstract

IN THE PRESENT STUDY THE SERUM FOLIC ACID BINDING CAPACITY FROM 50 HOMOZYGOUS AND 50 HETEROZYGOUS B - THALASSEMIA PATIENTS WAS MEASURED. THE MEAN VALUE FROM THE HOMOZYGOUS GROUP WAS 75,0+-7,2 PG/ML FOR THE UNSATURATED AND 119,4+-9,5 PG/ML FOR THE TOTAL FOLATE BINDING CAPACITY. THE CORRESPONDING VALUE FROM THE HETEROZYGOUS GROUP WAS 64,0+-11,2 PG/ML FOR THE UNSATURATED AND 119,4+-12,7 PG/ML FOR THE TOTAL FOLATE BINDING CAPACITY. COMPARING THE VALUES BETWEEN THE TWO GROUPS AND BETWEEN THEM AND THE CORRESPONDING VALUES FROM 70 NORMAL SUBJECTS WE FOUND THAT THE UNSATURATED BINDING CAPACITY IN THE CASE OF HOMOZYGOUS SUBJECTS WAS NOT STATISTICALLY DIFFERENT. THE VALUES OBTAINED FROM THE HETEROZYGOUS SUBJECTS WERE CLOSER TO THE NORMAL ONES. THERE WAS NO CORRELATION ON EACH SUBJECTS BETWEEN THE SERUM FOLIC ACID LEVEL AND THE UNSATURATED OR TOTAL FOLIC ACID BINDING CAPACITY. IN SUMMARY NO CORRELATION CAN BE ESTABLISHED BETWEEN FOLIC ACID LOW SERUM LEVEL AND HIGH UNSATURATED BINDING CAPACITY IN THE GROUP OF HOMOZYGOUS B - THALASSEMIA.
