Abstract

Tourism has always been regarded as a factor that can influence political, economic and social changes and can contribute to new ideological and spatial transformations in many destinations (Meethan, 2001; Urry and Larsen, 2011). The Mediterranean has long been a frontier place of tourism because it is the most developed and a popular region for lei-sure and recreation (Manera et al., 2009). However, the region is also a place where cultural and social transformations are articulated in local and national dimensions. Culture and Society in Tourism Contexts is an edited volume that explores the social and cultural processes associated with the development of tourism in the Mediterranean. The volume largely concerns the social and anthropological dimensions of tourism and includes some important debates and discussions concerning globalization, leisure and cultural mobilities, cosmopolitanism, cultural identities and nation branding.
