By ΕΛΕΥΘΕΡΙΑ ΧΡΙΣΤΟΦΙΔΟΥ

Abstract

THE PRESENT STUDY WAS UNDERTAKEN TO DETERMINE THE STRUCTURE AND MAINLY THE ULTRASTRUCTURE OF THE VARIOUS PARTS OF THE ECHINICOCCUS CYST. FOR THIS PURPOSE 20SURGICALLY EXCISED HYDATID CYSTS FROM PATIENTS WITH PULMONARY OR LIVER ECHINOCOCCOSIS WERE EXAMINED. SEMITHIN SECTIONS FROM MATERIAL EMBEDDED IN EPON 812 WERE PRELIMINARY EXAMINED AND AFTER THAT THIN SECTIONS WERE EXAMINED WITH THEELECTRON MICROSCOPE. SOME OF THE PREVIOUSLY KNOWN FINDINGS WERE CLEARLY DEMONSTRATED. SOME OTHER FINDINGS WERE DESCRIBED FOR THE FIRST TIME AND ALL OF THEMARE OF DIAGNOSTIC VALUE AND CONFIRM INTERESTING FOR THE PARASITE BIOLOGY ULTRASTRUCTURAL DETAILS. THE TERM TINY SCOLICES IS MUCH MORE ACCURATE THAN THE TERM SCOLICES HEAD. THE MAIN FINDINGS OF THE EXAMINED SEMITHIN SECTIONS IN THE OPTICAL MICROSCOPE WERE: THE PRESENCE OF PROTOSCOLICES IN THE BROOD CAPSULES WHICH WERE ATTACHED TO THE BROOD CAPSULES WALL BY MEANS OF A STALK. THE BIREFRINGEMENT OF THE HOOKS USING INTERFERENCE FILTERS. THE "TUBE IN TUBE" APPEARANCEOF THE PROTOSCOLICES AND THE PRESENCE OF FUCHINOPHILIC VESICLES UNDER THE PROTOSCOLEX TEGUMENT. THE ULTRASTRUCTURAL FINDINGS WERE CONCERNING THE LAMINATED LAYER, THE GERMINAL MEMBRANE AND THE PROTOSCOLICES. THE LAMINATED LAYER WAS FOUND TO BE MADE UP OF LAYERS OF ACELLULAR MATERIAL WITH IRREGULAR SHAPED VACUOLES IN A BACKGROUND OF FINE IRREGULARLY ARRANGED FIBERS. DEGENERATED CELLULAR ELEMENTS WERE FOUND IN THE GERMINAL MEMBRANE. THE (ABSTRACT TRUNCATED)
