QUANTIFICATION OF GLYCOSAMINOGLYCANS IN CEREBROSPINAL FLUID FROM PATIENTS WITH VARIOUS C.N.S LESIONS

By ΠΑΡΑΣΚΕΥΗ ΤΣΕΛΙΩΤΗ

Abstract

IN OUR RESEARCH, WE TRIED TO INVESTIGATE THE PRESENCE OF GLYCOSAMINOGLYCANS IN CEREBROSPINAL FLUID OF PATIENTS WITH VARIOUS CENTRAL NERVOUS SYSTEM LESIONS. WE HAVE MEASURED THE GLYCOSAMINOGLYCANS' LEVELS IN 65 SAMPLES OF CEREBROSPINAL FLUID, USING THE METACHROMATIC METHOD OF 1,9-DIMETHYLMETHYLENE BLUE. GLYCOSAMINOGLYCANS IN CEREBROSPINAL FLUID ARE NOT ONLY DETECTABLE BUT THEY ARE ALSO MEASURABLE. IN OUR RESEARCH, WE DIDN'T ESTABLISH ANY STANDARD CORRELATION NEITHERBETWEEN GLYCOSAMINOGLYCANS' LEVELS AND PROTEIN CONCENTRATION IN CSF, NOR BETWEEN GAGS LEVELS AND THE NUMBER OF LEUCO-OR ERYTHROCYTES IN CSF. ON THE CONTRARY WE OBSERVED A DESCENDING TENDENCY OF GLYCOSAMINOGLYCANS LEVELS IN CSF SAMPLES OF PATIENTS WITH CNS MALIGNANT TUMORS.
