THE STUDY OF THE CAUSES OF THE RESIDUAL AMBLYOPIA OF CHILDREN AND THE CONCLUSIONS ON ITS PREVENTION AND TREATMENT

By ΚΩΝΣΤΑΝΤΙΝΟΣ ΡΟΥΓΓΑΣ

Abstract

THE PURPOSE OF THIS STUDY IS TO INVESTIGATE: A) THE CAUSES OF AMBLYOPIA, B) WHICH ARE THE AGGRAVATING AND WHICH ARE THE FAVOURING FACTORS FOR THE PROGNOSIS OF AMBLYOPIA, AND C) WHICH THERAPY METHODS OFFER GOOD RESULTS AND WHEN. IN A PERIOD OF FIVE YEARS, 1900 CHILDREN AGED OVER SIX YEARS, WITH (RESIDUAL) AMBLYOPIA ON ONE OR BOTH EYES (VISUAL ACUITY < = 7/10), WERE EXAMINED TO THE ORTHOPTIC DEPARTMENT OF THE OPHTHALMIATRION EYE HOSPITAL OF ATHENS. IN ORDER TO OBTAIN THE POSSIBILITY OF COMPARISON AND VALUATION, WE RANDOMLY CHOSE THE FILES OF500 CHILDREN-WITNESSES, AGED OVER SIX YEARS, WHO HAD AMBLYOPIA WHICH WAS, WITHIN SOME TIME, TREATED (FINAL VISUAL ACUITY > = 8/10). THE COMPARISON OF THOSETWO GROUPS CONCERNS: A) THE SEX, B) THE LOCATION OF DOMICILE, C) THE LOCATION(UNI-OR BILATERAL) OF THE AMBLYOPIA, D) THE REFRACTION, E) THE PRESENCE OR NOT OF ANISOMETROPIA, F) THE OCULOMOTOR STATUS, Z) THE EXISTENCE OR NOT OF BINOCULAR VISION, H) THE DEPTH OF THE AMBLYOPIA, I) THE THERAPY METHODS PRACTICED,J) THE EXISTENCE OR NOT OF AN ORGANIC LESION, AND K) THE PRESENCE OR NOT OF NYSTAGMUS. THIS COMPARISON LEADS US TO THE FOLLOWING CONCLUSIONS: A) THE COMMONEST CAUSE OF AMBLYOPIA IS STRABISMUS. B) THE CAUSES WITH NOT FAVOURABLE PROGNOSIS ARE, STIMULUS DEPRIVATION, EXCENTRIC FIXATION, ANISOMETROPIA, HIGH MYOPIA, EXOTROPIA AND NYSTAGMUS. C) THE CAUSES WITH FAVOURABLE PROGNOSIS ARE ESOTROPIA AND HYPERMETROPIA. D) BESIDE THE SIMPLE TYPES OF AMBLYOPIA, MIXED TYPES, WITH MORE THAN ONE CAUSATIVE FACTORS, DO EXIST. (ABSTRACT TRUNCATED)
