FREQUENCY OF NASOPHARYNGEAL CARRIAGE OF HAEMOPHILUS SP. IN CHILDREN. A CLINICOLABORATORY INVESTIGATION

Abstract

THIS PAPER PRESENTS THE RESULTS OF PHARYNGEAL CULTURES FOR ISOLATION OF HAEMOPHILUS SP. FROM 205 OUTPATIENT AND 212 HOSPITALIZED CHILDREN IN AN ATTEMPT TO STUDY THE ECOLOGY AND THE CARRIAGE OF HAEMOPHILI AND ESPECIALLY H. INFLUENZAE INCHILDREN. THE ISOLATION RATE OF HAEMOPHILUS SP. WAS 92,1%, OF H. INFLUENZAE 55,9% AND STRAINS OF SEROTYPE B 29,4%, OF H. PARAINFLUENZAE 72,2%, OF H. HAEMOLYTICUS 5,7% AND OF H. PARAHAEMOLYTICUS 11,7%. AGE, THE SEASON OF THE YEAR, THE FAMILY SIZE AND THE USE OF ANTIBIOTICS HAD AN INFLUENCE IN THE CARRIAGE RATEOF H. INFLUENZAE. AMONG THE STRAINS OF H. INFLUENZAE FOUND, THE MAJORITY WAS OF SEROTYPE B AND THE PREDOMINANT BIOTYPE WAS BIOTYPE III. 20,81% WERE RESISTANT TO AMPICILLIN, 26% TO ERYTHROMYCIN AND 10,78% TO CO-TRIMOXAZOLE.
