THE PRODUCTION AND THE PATHOGENESIS OF CHEMICAL EXPERIMENTAL �OSTEOMYELITIS IN RATS

Abstract

THE AIM OF THIS STUDY HAS BEEN THE ATTEMPT TO CAUSE EXPERIMENTAL CHEMICAL OSTEOMYELITIS IN RATS OF WISTAR TYPE, IN ORDER TO INVESTIGATE THE PATHOGENETIC MECHANISMS INVOLVED IN THE DEVELOPMENT OF CHEMICAL OSTEOMYELITIS OF THE JAWS. THE METHOD INCLUDED INTRAOSSEOUS INJECTION OF TRICHLOROACETIC ACID IN THE MANDIBLE OF THE EXPERIMENTAL ANIMALS WHICH RESULTED IN CHEMICAL NECROSIS OF THE JAWS, A SITUATION THAT LEADS TO THE DEVELOPMENT OF CHEMICAL OSTEOMYELITIS, WHEN INFECTION SUPERVENE IN THE BONE. THE ROLE OF TWO PHARMACEUTICAL SUBSTANCES(PENICILLIN AND METHOTRAXATE) IN THE PATHOGENESIS OF CHEMICAL OSTEOMYELITISOF THE JAWS ARE ALSO INVESTIGATED. OUR RESULTS SHOWED THAT EXPERIMENTAL ANIMALS BUT THE FREQUENCY AND SEVERITY OF THE DISEASE WAS DIFFERENT IN EACH GROUP. THUS THE ADMINISTRATION OF PENICILLIN REDUCED THE POSSIBILITY OF DEVELOPINGINFECTION, WHEREAS THE IMMUNOSUPPRESSION THAT HAS BEEN CAUSED BY METHOTRAXATEINCREASED THE FREQUENCE OF DEVELOPING CHEMICAL OSTEOMYELITIS.
