THE INFLUENCE OF GANULOCYTE-COLONY STIMULATING FACTOR (G-CSF) ON THE MYELOSUPRESSION DUE TO RADIOTHERAPY OR RADIO- AND CHEMOTHERAPY

Abstract

THE AIM OF THIS STUDY WAS THE INVESTIGATION OF THE ACTIVITY OF G-CSF IN FOUR DIFFERENT GROUPS OF PATIENTS WITH NEOPLASMS AND LEUKOPENIA INDUCED BY CHEMOTHERAPY OR RADIOTHERAPY. WE STUDIED 38 PATIENTS WHO WERE DIVIDED INTO FOUR GROUPS ACCORDING TO THE CAUSE OF LEUKOPENIA AND THE WHITE BLOOD SELL COUNT. GROUP A INCLUDED 11 PATIENTS WITH LEUKOPENIA AFTER THE ADMINISTRATION OF CYTOTOXIC CHEMOTHERAPY (SALVAGE G-CSF ADMINISTRATION). GROUP B INCLUDED 14 PATIENTS WHO PRESENTED WITH LOW WBC (2-3000 MM3) PRIOR TO THE ADMINISTRATION OF A CHEMOTHERAPY CYCLE (SUPPORTIVE G-CSF ADMINISTRATION). GROUP C INCLUDED 9 PATIENTS WITH RADIOTHERAPY INDUCED LEUKOPENIA (SALVAGE G-CSF ADMINISTRATION). FINALLY, GROUP D, WHICH INCLUDED ONLY 4 PATIENTS FOR MORAL REASONS WITH CHEMOTHERAPY INDUCED LEUKOPENIA AND WITHOUT G-CSF SALVAGE ADMINISTRATION. THE GROWTH FACTORG-CSF WAS ADMINISTRATED SUBCUTANEOUSLY AT A DOSE OF 300 ΜG DAILY FOR 10 CONSECUTIVE DAYS TO THE GROUP A AND C SIMULTANEOUSLY WITH THE APPEARANCE OF GRANOLOCYTOPENIA AND NEUTROPENIA (<1000/M3). IN GROUP B, THE G-CSF WAS ADMINISTRATED TO PATIENTS WITH LOW WBC (~3000/M3) 24H AFTER THE ADMINISTRATION OF A CYCLE OF CHEMOTHERAPY AT THE SAME DOSE. GROUP D DIDN'T RECEIVE G-CSF.
