IMPROVEMENT OF THERMAL DECOMPOSITION OF LIMESTONE

Abstract

SUBJECT OF THE PRESENT THESIS IS THE IMPROVEMENT IN THE KINETICS AND THERMODYNAMIC PARAMETERS OF THE DECOMPOSITION OF LIMESTONE. ON THIS PURPOSE, FOUR ORGANIC ACIDS-OXALIC, ACETIC, TARTARIC AND CITRIC- WERE SELECTED AS ADDITIVES ANDTHEIR INFLUENCE WAS STUDIED ON THE RATE, ENTHALPY AND TEMPERATURE OF THE DECOMPOSITION OF CALCIUM CARBONATE. IN THE EXPERIMENTAL PART THE EFFECT OF THE ORGANIC ACIDS USED, WHICH WERE ADDED IN AN AMOUNT OF 5, 10 AND 20% W/W IN THE FINAL SAMPLE, HAS BEEN EVALUATED BY USING DIFFERENTIAL SCANNING CALORIMETRY (DSC). AS IT RESULTS FROM THE THERMOGRAMMES, THE DECOMPOSITION PROFILE IS LOWER, AS TEMPERATURE CONCERNS, IN COMPARISON TO THOSE OF A PURE CALCIUM CARBONATESAMPLE. IN ADDITION, THE RELATIVE REQUIRED ENERGY IS DECREASED UP TO 20%. A FURTHER APPROACH OF THE EFFECT OF THE ORGANIC ACIDS STUDIED WITH THE METHOD OFX-RAY DIFFRACTION (XRD), WHILE THE SAMPLES WERE BURNED IN SEVERAL TEMPERATURES FROM 100 TILL 900 C.
