A COMPARATIVE STUDY OF EXPERIMENTALLY INDUCED NUTRITIONAL FIBROUS OSTEODYSTROPHY (NUTRITIONAL SECONDARY HYPERPARATHYREODISM) IN THE SHEEP AND GOAT)

By ΑΛΕΞΑΝΔΡΟΣ ΚΟΥΤΙΝΑΣ

Abstract

THE PRESENT EXPERIMENTAL STUDY WAS CARRIED OUT IN ORDER TO DETECT THE DIFFERENCES BETWEEN SHEEP AND GOATS CONCERNING NUTRITIONAL FITROUS OSTEODYSTROPHY, WHICH IS CAUSED WHEN ANIMALS ARE FED ON CALCIUM DEFICIENT AND RICH IN PHOSPHOROUSDIETS, AND CONCURRENTLY TO THROW LIGHT INTO THE CAUSES WHICH ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR THESE DIFFERENCES. THE RESULTS, WHICH CAME UP, SHOWED THAT GOATS RESTORE TO NORMAL THE CALCIUM LEVELS IN BLOOD MORE EFFICIENTLY THAN SHEEP DO, APPARENTLY BECAUSE THE SIZE OF THE PARATHYROID GLANDS IS BIGGER AND THEIR RESPONSE TO HYPOCALCEMIA IS MORE INTENSE IN THE FORMER THAN IN THE LATTER ANIMAL SPECIES. THIS KIND OF RESTORATION IS ACCOMPLISHED IN SUCH A WAY THAT BONE DEMINERALIZATION IS MORE PROFOUND AND THE OSTEODYSTROPHIC LESIONS, WHICH FOLLOW IT, ARE MORE SEVERE IN THE GOAT THAN IN THE SHEEP.
