Abstract

ONE HUNDRED AND TWENTY TWO PATIENTS HOSPITALIZED IN THE SURGICAL DEPARTMENT OFTHE MEDICAL SCHOOL OF ATHENS, COMPRISE THE PRESENT INVESTIGATION. THESE PATIENTS WERE OPERATED FOR ISCHEMIA OF THE LOWER EXTREMITIES DUE TO DESTRUCTIVE ARTERIOSCLEROTIC CHANGES OF THE AORTO-ILIAC AND FEMORAL SEGMENT IN WHOM A PLASTICDACRON OR GOR-TEX BY PASS PROSTHESIS OR A VENOUS AUTOGRAFT FROM THE LOWER SAPHENOUS VEIN WERE PLACED. CKECKING OF CIRCULATION BEFORE AND AFTER THE PROCEDURE BY MEANS OF NON-INVASIVE DIAGNOSTIC METHODS WAS CARRIED OUT (ULTRASOUNDS (DOPPLER) AND PLETHYSMOGRAPHY). THE MEASUREMENTS OF CIRCULATION ON THE LOWER EXTREMITIES, AFTER THE PROCEDURE WERE CARRIED OUT AT REGULAR TIME INTERVALS THAT IS, 3, 6 AND 10TH POST OPERATIVE DAY. THE RESULTS OF THESE MEASUREMENTS PERMITTHE ESTABLISHMENT OF POSTOPERATIVE INCREASE OF BLOOD FLOW IN THE LOWER EXTREMITIES AS WELL AS THE PATENCY OR NON-PATENCY OF THE PROSTHESIS AND THE VIABILITY AND FUNCTIONAL CAPACITY OF THE PATIENTS LIMBS AFTER THE ARTERIOPLASTIC PROCEDURES.
