A Novel Technique For The Solvent Extraction And Separation of Lanthanum(III) And Neodymium(III) Using Hexaacetao Calix(6)Arene Authors

Abstract

A method is proposed for the extraction of Lanthanum(III) and Neodymium(III) using Hexaacetato Calix(6)arene. The optimum extraction conditions are evaluated from a critical study of the effect of pH, concentration of extractant, shaking time, concentration of various mineral acids used as stripping agents, different types of polar and non polar diluents and effect of diverse ions. Solvent extraction of La(III) and Nd(III) was carried out using Hexaacetato Calix(6)arene in Xylene. Lanthanum(III) and Neodymium(III) are quantitatively extracted with 1 x 10-4 M of the ligand in Xylene at pH 8 and pH 6 when equilibrated for 10 and 12 minutes respectively. 0.1M NaNO3 has to be added for the quantitative extraction of La(III). Lanthanum and Neodymium in the organic phase were stripped with 1 M and 5 M Nitric acid and determined spectrophotometrically by the Arsenazo(III) method at 655 nm and Xylenol Orange method at 530 nm respectively. The metal loading capacity of the reagents is also studied. The extraction of La(III) and Nd(III) was carried out in the presence of various ions to ascertain the tolerance limit of individual ions. The method is extended for the determination of La(III) and Nd(III) in real samples. 1
