Mass transfer from smooth alabaster surfaces in turbulent flows

Abstract

Abstract. The mass transfer velocity for al-abaster plates in smooth-wall turbulent flow is found to vary with the friction velocity according to an analytic solution of the advective diffusion equation. Deployment of alabaster plates on the sea floor can perhaps be used to estimate the vis-cous stress, and transfer velocities for other species. Int roduct ion Fluxes of chemical species across the sediment-water interface in the world's oceans play an im-portant role in many of the dominant geochemical cycles. In addition, it is often necessary to es-timate the flux of a given species to determine its source strength in the sediment or in the overlyin
