Abstract

The collection consists of photographs, letters, documents and books related to the life of Dorothea Gould, née Guttmann, and her husband, Henry Gould.digitizedDorothea (Dola) Gould, née Guttmann, was born on April 27, 1922 in Tilsit (today Sovetsk in Russia) to Abraham Guttmann (10/24/1874 in Schillehnen – 3/26/1963 in Montreal) and Feige Taube Guttmann, née Berlowitz, (1/4/1879 - 7/23/1967). Dola had four brothers (Noah; Helmut (Koffel); Steven (Sally); and Heinz) and a sister, Gertrud. - Heinz Guttmann emigrated to Rhodesia and then to England. Gertrud Guttmann was born 9/8/1905; she worked in a Jewish orphanage in Berlin and was deported to Auschwitz on May 17, 1943, where she perished. - Dola and her parents emigrated to Montreal, Canada in 1939.On 8/7/1960, Dola married Henry H. Goldschmidt Gould, a successful businessman in Montreal. - Henry was born on July 15, 1914 in Berlin, Germany to Martin (1879 - 1944) and Paula Goldschmidt, née Harmelin (1880 - 1958). He had a sister, Ruth Augusta Beatrice Goldschmidt (1923 - 1958). - Henry and Ruth were educated in private schools in Switzerland. He emigrated to New York prior to 1941 and then to Montreal. His parents and sister joined him in April 1941 in New York.Dola and Henry eventually settled in Switzerland. After Henry’s death (8/6/1978), Dola dedicated a great part of her time and wealth to charity, like supporting cultural and social causes in Israel. She died on June 8, 2003 in Zurich, Switzerland.Dorothea Gould Guttmann's papers were given to her cousin, Dr. Peter Brody, who donated them to the LB
