Note: This paper grew out of an invitation to Pat Keating to summarize and critique the model of phonological encoding presented in Levelt, Roelofs and Meyer (1999) at the Labphon7 meeting in Nijmegen, the Netherlands, in 2000. As a result, and because this model specifically addresses the problems of phonological and phonetic processing which concern us here, we focus largely on it, leaving little opportunity to discuss the advances in other models of the speech productio
