By Robert F. Johnson, J. J. Carroll and L. J. Greenfield

Abstract

Amino acids with specific carbon atoms labeled with Cl ” and an inorganic source of carbon were tested and found to be sources of carbonate for shell formation in the conch Strombus gigas. All the substances were dissolved in seawater and were utilized in carbon-ate formation. In addition, some metabolically labclcd by-products were identified. The rate of shell formation was found to bc rclatcd to the physical activity of S. gigas
