A data science pipeline applied to Australia's 2022 COVID-19 Omicron waves
The field of software engineering is advancing at astonishing speed, with packages now available to support many stages of data science pipelines. These packages can support infectious disease modelling to be more robust, efficient and transparent, which has been particularly important during the COVID-19 pandemic. We developed a package for the construction of infectious disease models, integrated it with several open-source libraries and applied this composite pipeline to multiple data sources that provided insights into Australia's 2022 COVID-19 epidemic. We aimed to identify the key processes relevant to COVID-19 transmission dynamics and thereby develop a model that could quantify relevant epidemiological parameters. The pipeline's advantages include markedly increased speed, an expressive application programming interface, the transparency of open-source development, easy access to a broad range of calibration and optimisation tools and consideration of the full workflow from input manipulation through to algorithmic generation of the publication materials. Extending the base model to include mobility effects slightly improved model fit to data, with this approach selected as the model configuration for further epidemiological inference. Under our assumption of widespread immunity against severe outcomes from recent vaccination, incorporating an additional effect of the main vaccination programs rolled out during 2022 on transmission did not further improve model fit. Our simulations suggested that one in every two to six COVID-19 episodes were detected, subsequently emerging Omicron subvariants escaped 30–60% of recently acquired natural immunity and that natural immunity lasted only one to eight months on average. We documented our analyses algorithmically and present our methods in conjunction with interactive online code notebooks and plots. We demonstrate the feasibility of integrating a flexible domain-specific syntax library with state-of-the-art packages in high performance computing, calibration, optimisation and visualisation to create an end-to-end pipeline for infectious disease modelling. We used the resulting platform to demonstrate key epidemiological characteristics of the transition from the emergency to the endemic phase of the COVID-19 pandemic
Recent advance in Mn-based Li-rich cathode materials: Oxygen release mechanism and its solution strategies based on electronic structure perspective, spanning from commercial liquid batteries to all-solid-state batteries
Abstracts: The current widespread use of lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) in transportation and consumer electronics has spurred the pursuit of developing cathode materials with enhanced energy density, aiming to commercialize LIBs with improved performance. Mn-based Li-rich layered oxides, among the various types of cathode materials, possess outstanding merits such as high energy density, low cost, and environmentally friendly, which make them the most promising commercial cathode materials for LIBs. However, the low initial cycle efficiency, voltage and capacity attenuation, and phase transformation significantly slow down the process of commercial application. The essential origin of the above drawbacks is the redox reaction from the lattice oxygen in the initial uptake/release process. Based on the advanced characterizations and theoretical analysis, researchers have gained a deep understanding of the fundamental issues and subsequent solution strategies. Firstly, this present article provides a comprehensive review of the redox reaction mechanism involving lattice oxygen in liquid lithium-ion battery avenue, focusing on the perspective of electronic energy levels. Then, the article provides an in-depth analysis and summary of the relevant solution strategies, as well as a detailed overview of the application and challenges of Li-rich cathode materials in all-solid-state lithium-ion batteries (ASSLBs). The primary objective of this review is to offer targeted guidance for the development of Li-rich cathodes that are both highly efficient and safe, with a particular emphasis on their potential application in the future all-solid-state battery technology
Adult-onset pancreatic neuroblastoma: A case report with a literature review
Neuroblastoma is an aggressive malignancy commonly found in children, with adult patients being quite rare. Pancreatic neuroblastoma, even among adult cases, is especially rare. We present a case of a 26-year-old woman presented with mild abdominal pain and a palpable mass diagnosed as neuroblastoma affecting the pancreas. After initial diagnostic challenges, a biopsy confirmed the diagnosis of neuroblastoma. The patient thereafter underwent a course of neoadjuvant chemotherapy, followed by a complex surgical resection. This case highlights the importance of a comprehensive diagnostic approach, including repeated biopsies and the involvement of a multidisciplinary team in the management of rare presentations of adult neuroblastoma
Jejunal diverticulosis: A rare diagnosis with serious complications
Diverticula of the jejunum is a rare but real disease with various manifestations. The diagnosis is often missed due to a lack of awareness, leading to delays and added complications, and consequently increased morbidity and mortality. Management remains controversial, ranging from a conservative approach that recommends rest, analgesics with close monitoring even for mildly complicated cases, to an aggressive approach justified by the increased risk of complications. We report the case of a 40- year-old-woman with no significant medical history who presented with recurrent left abdominal pain. A CT-scan revealed multiple jejunal diverticula, some of which were inflamed, leading to a final diagnosis of jejunal diverticulitis. This case discusses the clinical presentation, complications, diagnosis and management of this condition
Text messaging to improve connection between adolescents and their health care providers
Objective Adolescence marks a time of transition where teenagers are learning to advocate for themselves. In those with underlying chronic conditions such as adolescent dysautonomia, improving communication between clinic visits may improve connection with their health care provider which may aide management. Our aims were as follows: (1) to implement a text message platform to increase communication between adolescent patients and health care provider (HCP); (2) to evaluate its effect on quality of life (QoL), symptom burden, and patient engagement; and (3) to determine patient satisfaction with the platform. Methods Participants (age 12–18) with access to a personal mobile phone were recruited from a pediatric dysautonomia clinic. A weekly automated text message asking “How are you?” was sent to participants (WelTel Inc.). Responses were triaged to HCP and responded to within 48 hours. Results Twenty-six participants with median (interquartile range) age of 16.8 (15.7–17.4) years completed the study. Duration of the text messaging intervention was 33 (26.8–37.3) weeks. A total of 896 automated weekly messages were sent, which resulted in 206 (23%) care conversations. Participants found texting useful (96%) and produced feelings of connection to their HCP (92%). There was no change in overall QoL or symptom burden ( p > 0.05). Conclusion A text message platform was successfully implemented in adolescents seen in our Dysautonomia Clinic. Patients were engaged, satisfied with the platform, and felt connected to their HCP despite no changes in QoL or symptom burden

Mesospheric tide comparisons at low latitudes observed by two collocated meteor radars
Accurate knowledge of mesospheric winds and waves is essential for studying the dynamics and climate in the mesosphere and lower thermosphere (MLT) region. In this study, we conduct a comparative analysis of the mesosphere tidal results obtained from two adjacent meteor radars at low latitudes in Kunming, China, from November 2013 to December 2014. These two radars operate at different frequencies of 37.5 MHz and 53.1 MHz, respectively. However, overall good agreement is observed between the two radars in terms of horizontal winds and tide observations. The results show that the dominant tidal waves of the zonal and meridional winds are diurnal and semidiurnal tides. Moreover, we conduct an exhaustive statistical analysis to compare the tidal amplitudes and vertical wavelengths recorded by the dual radar systems, which reveals a high degree of alignment in tidal dynamics. The investigation includes variances and covariances of tidal amplitudes, which demonstrate remarkable consistency across measurements from both radars. This finding highlights clear uniformity in the mesospheric tidal patterns observed at low latitudes by the two neighboring meteor radars. Results of the comparative analysis specifically underscore the significant correlation in vertical wavelength measurements, validating the robustness of radar observations for tidal research
