On (Some) European Ways of Waging War and Making Peace
The history of Europe is as much about violence and divisions as it is about shared cultural, social, and economic accomplishments. War has been a constant feature of Europe’s history, shaping a shared European space. However, efforts to reduce the destructiveness of war, leading to the development of Jus ad bellum and international law, have also been key to defining Europe. The authors explore some European ways of conceiving of war and peace from the early eighteenth to the mid-twentieth centuries, showing how these debates helped shape the concept of ‘Europe’

Civil Society and Autocratisation Co-optation, Repression and Contestation in Turkey
This book investigates the transformation of civil society in Turkey during its latest and longest-lasting episode of autocratisation under the rule of the Justice and Development Party (AKP). Drawing on extensive fieldwork, interviews, and documentary analysis, the book introduces a three-fold theoretical framework to account for civil society’s transformation: co-optation, repression, and contestation. Some organisations have been co-opted to become ideological arms of the AKP within civil society, transmitting the authoritarian regime's influence through patronage networks, social provision, and coordinated efforts in indoctrination and grass-roots mobilisation. The AKP employs selective repression through legislative, judicial and discursive strategies to undermine civic networks, organisations and groups that do not yield to co-optation. Despite co-optation and repression, autonomous civil society employs various counter-strategies to remain resilient, such as public advocacy, non-violent protest, digital activism, and democratic innovations. This study critically examines civil society's dual role as both an enabler and a resistor of autocratisation and offers new insights into the coexistence of authoritarian governance and democratic resilience
Unusual Reaction of Isocyanides with Aromatic Aldehydes Catalyzed by a Supramolecular Capsule
The supramolecular resorcinarene hexameric capsule efficiently
promotes the unprecedented reaction between isocyanides and
electron-deficient aromatic aldehydes leading to the formation
of imines and carbon monoxide. The mechanism of the reaction
was investigated via isotope labelling, kinetic analysis of the
reaction, computational studies and the independent synthesis
of a proposed intermediate. Control experiments indicate that
the formation of the key aziridinone intermediate is limited to
the cavity of the capsul
Language Policy in Japan: Modernity, Modernity Maintenance, and Late Modernity
Japan was the first Asian country to modernize its languages, setting thereby a model for other Asian nations to follow. The sociolinguistic problems Japan had to confront differed in three important ways from European language modernization. Firstly, the Japanese language is structurally and pragmatically different, thereby presenting problems not faced in other language modernization efforts. Secondly, the Japanese writing system and the relation between written and spoken languages required original solutions. Thirdly, Japan had to overcome the pessimistic view that dominated at the end of the twentieth century. At the time, it was widely thought that only Western languages could be carriers of modern thought
One Big Happy Family? The Social Relationships and Legacy of the Kinoshita-gumi
The interpersonal relationships in Japanese film production under the studio system have often been represented in familial terms, as the work commonly took place in teams (kumi) built around individual directors. Arguably, none of these possessed the intimacy and longevity of the one devised by Kinoshita Keisuke at Shōchiku, the core of which comprised his actual family members. The line-up of the Kinoshita-gumi also included a number of protégés who subsequently went on to have careers as some of the most important directors of their generation (Kobayashi Masaki, Teshigahara Hiroshi, Yoshida Kijū) as well as several hitherto understudied filmmakers and writers (Kawazu Yoshirō, Matsuyama Zenzō, Ōtsuki Yoshikazu, Yamada Ta’ichi). While such master-apprentice relationships have been at times regarded as oppressive, according to the reminiscences of former crew members, the nurturing and supportive Kinoshita seems to have been an exception to the rule. The aim of this chapter is to delineate the Kinoshita-gumi and its inner relationships and by so doing to identify the scope and influence of its working methods and thematic preoccupations beyond Kinoshita’s own directorial features as well as to chart his legacy as it extended to popular television drama series in the late 1960s and beyond

The Ecumenical Study Days of Chevetogne
This contribution offers a substantial analysis of the work of the first international association of Catholic ecumenists, the Catholic Conference for Ecumenical Questions, which organized nine consultations in between 1952 and 1963 under the leadership of its secretary, Johannes Willebrands. After sketching the complex history of the creation of a workable structure for the CCEQ, the attention goes to its two major achievements, which chronologically follow one another. Sections 2 and 3 show how the CCEQ has made an attempt to provide a Catholic response to themes of interest to the World Council of Churches. Sections 4 and 5 demonstrate how the CCEQ and its board through the composition of a position paper on Christian unity and through the organization of the 1960 and 1961 conferences contributed to the renewal of Roman Catholic ecclesiology and ecumenism. The final section describes the attempts of CCEQ to organize interconfessional meetings of theologians
