Moriah wrote “December Yellow” while living atthe Homestead, and drew her inspiration from the ecologically-minded community fostered there.William Barnes (he/him) is a senior biology major. He was—and is very much still—a bug kid, andmost of his writing inspiration stems from day-long adventures with his brother through their woodsand calm walks with his grandma around the creek. Rummaging through his head for something towrite reminds him of the mossy logs he  ips in search of cool bugs, and the playfulness between hismind and pieces of paper—or more commonly, Google docs—keeps him writing.Antonia Baylor (she/her) is a freshman psychology and English creative writing double major. She isfrom Lincoln, Nebraska and one of six siblings. Her favorite poet is Ted Kooser, but she’s always beenbiased when it comes to poems, stories, music, or art that reminds her of the midwest, so most of herpoems tend to center around the theme of family and home. Antonia hadn't devoted meaningful timeto poetry until this year, though she’d like to count her older fondness for songwriting as a kind ofpoetry. It  uctuates between the guitar and piano, but she also loves to play the drums, ukulele, andsing in di erent groups on campus.Annika J. Bruce (she/her) is a senior English creative writing and educational studies double major.As an Appalachian writer, she writes on childhood, home, family, relationships, endometriosis, grief,and healing. Annika enjoys reading poetry, drinking co ee, and spending time with her two black cats.She wants to thank Professor Leonard and Professor Weaver for everything they’ve done for her.Abby Conturo (she/they) is a sophomore studio art major and English creative writing minor. Herartistic practice includes painting, sewing, drawing, writing, screen printing, and whatever else pulls herinterest. They  nd inspiration in Denison’s wildlife and scenery as well as topics related to queeridentity. Abby frequently sells prints of their work at Denison’s student  ea markets.Rita Costa (she/her) is a junior BFA studio art major and communication minor. She is the PRDirector for the University Programming Council, Social Media Assistant for Arts at Denison, andrisograph TA. In her free time, she loves creating illustrations! Rita’s pieces for this issue of Exile are the75result of many brief moments of inspiration she strove to capture on the page. She hopes they are ableto transport the viewers to someplace new, whether it's to a very silly or contemplative place.S. A. Culyer (he/him) is a junior English creative writing major. He was born both near and somehowfar from everything in Cincinnati, and has been writing for most of his life. L’Etoile was transcribedfrom a scene in his most recent novel. He  nds it helpful to imagine character moments and scenes asscripts, as it keeps the action fresh and moving. He is in the midst of  nding an agent for this novel, butit has provided the research and study for his senior project, which he will undertake next year.Lauren Ehlers (she/her) is a junior English creative writing major and this is her  rst time submittingto Exile! Here at Denison, she works at the Writing Center, writes for the Bullsheet, and DJs for theDoobie. Lauren’s currently enrolled in a hugely inspiring Creative Non ction class with ProfessorMelissa Faliveno, and “Extractions” comes from that. She really enjoys the creative non ction genreand is looking forward to exploring it further in the future!Cordero L. M. Estremera (he/him) is a senior English creative writing major. He co-founded theproductionHere Us, is an English Fellow, and has worked for ITS service Desk. He is an avid reader,especially authors such as Maya Angelou and Gabriel Garcia Marquez, and believes that people arestories.Mia Fischel (she/her) is a freshman at Denison. She enjoys photography, writing, reading, andspending time outdoors. She’s involved in The Denisonian and Exile and also plays club ultimatefrisbee.Robert (Robbie) Garber is a senior English creative writing and psychology double major. Robbie isthe vice president of the men's fencing club and the epee squad captain for Denison’s travel team. Anyweekend Robbie’s not fencing, you'll  nd him at Gaming Guild, often playtesting a board game he’sbeen working on for the past four years. Robbie’s sad to be graduating and doesn’t want to leave sosoon. And while he doesn't know what he’ll be doing in the near professional future, Robbie will beheading to Japan as a CLS scholar shortly after graduation.Brin Glass (she/her) is a sophomore journalism major and English creative writing minor. Her dad is ahigh school English teacher, though she hated writing while growing up. Damn genes.Anna Gooch (she/her) is a freshman cinema major who has a deep love for the arts. On campus, shehas participated in 2 di erent Denison Independent Theatre Association productions. In her owntime, she has an a nity for dancing, theater, movie watching and appreciation, creative writing, andcrafting. Anna’s always had a love for storytelling and has worked on her own ability in the art throughnarrative writing in high school. However, during her  rst semester, she took an Intro to Creative76Writing course that uncovered her hidden love of poetry. She has now spent months cultivating newstorytelling techniques in poetic form. Anna’s found a unique comfort in expressing herself throughwritten words. She is proud to be sharing this piece, where she looks back to her chaotic family to formher complex meaning of a stable home, with Denison's literary magazine, Exile.Eliza Hughes is a junior theater major and English creative writing minor. The inspiration for“Mother and Child” was Eliza’s own experience with gender dysphoria, the  lms Rosemary's Baby andGet Out, and Stephen King and Jordan Peele's ideas about how the true monsters are those that we livewith every day. Eliza is the current president of Denison Independent Theatre Association as well as amember of Gaming Guild, Outlook, and Ballet Club, and is a member of Sigma Tau Delta and awinner of the Reese-Shackleford prize for Academic Achievement in Theatre.Rebecca Hurtado (she/her) is a freshman English creative writing major. She is a prose editor for Exileand is passionate about creative writing across many genres such as creative non- ction, poetry, and ction. Music is a major source of inspiration for her work whether that be the ambiance found in  lmscores or the work of lyricists such as Phoebe Bridgers, whose song “I Know the End” inspired herpoem “The End is Here.” “Cicada Lullaby” and “The End is Here” are special to Rebecca because theyare the  rst pieces she workshopped and cultivated while at Denison during her  rst semester Intro toCreative Writing class.Malina Infante (she/her) is a junior English creative writing and educational studies double major.She is an English Department Fellow, as well as a TA for the Poetry WritingWorkshop. She writes bothprose and poetry. She spent last summer completing a long-term project as a Summer Scholar and isset to continue that work this coming summer. She plans to complete her senior writing project inpoetry.Anna Northington Jones (she/her) is a junior studio art and communication double major. She is amember of the Food Recovery Network, KKG, and DITA shadowcast productions on campus. Annaenjoys drawing, painting, writing, reading, and rollerblading. Her work “Bystander” aims to explorethe bystander e ect and the practice of "washing your mouth out with soap" to instill regret at speakingand an attitude of controlling what you say. The character fears speaking out or saying something thatmay have a negative impact on them.Maggie Jones (she/her) is a sophomore education studies major and English creative writing minor.She works in the education department and is a member of Delta Gamma Sorority, where she’s theDiversity Delegate, the Director of DGDialogues, and the sophomore member of the Honor Board.She loves reading, the outdoors, and board games. One thing that inspires Maggie is her family,77including her four older brothers and four wonderful dogs. She enjoys meeting new people andhearing their stories.Georgia Reese Knox (she/her) is a sophomore cinema major and English creative writing minor fromLos Angeles, California. She has been shooting  lm photography for 5 years. She’s studying cinemahere at Denison, so her life quite literally revolves around  lm. Georgia works at the Bandersnatch andalso won best cinematography for her  rst short  lm at UCSB.Eliana Lazzaro is a freshman English literature and classical studies major with a minor in Greek.Eliana’s always been passionate about ancient literature, and loves writing about it! Stories fromantiquity have been fascinating to them since they were little, and to this day, those stories are theirmain source of inspiration. They love trying to understand the outlook of ancient cultures andconnecting with people from ages past. Aside from that, Eliana is a member of Eta Sigma Phi, and isalso involved with the DITA production of AMidsummer Night's Dream. Additionally, they wereaccepted to the Summer Scholars program where they’ll be doing research on grief in the Epic ofGilgamesh!Maarten Lempia (he/him) is a sophomore English creative writing major. He is a member of theDenison Ice Hockey Team and his piece “a little spot of green in a big red world” won 3rd place inDenison’s Danner Lee Mahood Fiction Competition in 2022.Caroline Lopez (she/her) is a sophomore Earth science and English literature double major looking to nd the intersections between the two and bridge some of the gaps between the sciences andhumanities. She loves to paint, but is interested in experimenting a little bit more with variousmediums and producing work that she’s not entirely comfortable with. "Alaska" is an example of somemultimedia work that's a little outside her comfort zone. Caroline’s favorite hobby is sur ng, which shedoesn’t get to do much of in Ohio, but always jumps at the chance to do when she’s in her home state.

A patchy coat of blue paint andwhite drywall cohabitated the space. So did Grandpa.***10th-grade summer.A bucket of blue paint, a bucket of white paint and Grandpa were sitting in front of me,interrogation-style. I was sitting crisscross apple sauce, comfortable-style. Grandpa said,"Put more blue in. It's not dark enough."I took the blue bucket and hurled half of what was left into a steel pail containing a light-bluemixture of paint. I said,"Why do we have to do this? They have those machines now that can make custom paintcolors.""We get more paint this way. Look, I got two cans of paint for the price of one of your fancyones. You kids are just so damn lazy now. That's how they get you to spend more money." As I pouredin the paint, he leaned over my shoulder and said, "Look at that. That's the perfect color right there."His mouth split into a gap-toothed smile. For the last forty or so years, each spoonful of ricealways came down with alcohol, not just because it tasted better with it but also because "the shit Idrink is strong enough to kill any dirty thing in my mouth. I don't need them damn toothpaste." Amonth-long liquid-food alcohol-free diet, a pessimistic dentist, and an even more pessimisticgastroenterologist didn't make him give up his old ways. The old stu  was evidently not strongenough. He started drinking even stronger shit.His smile irked me. I wanted to tell him that doing it his way resulted in the volume of one cananyway because we were not going to use the rest of the blue or white paint and that the color in thepail was about six shades darker than what was on his wall right now.I decided to shut my mouth.He bought the paint cans, not me. It was his wall, not mine. He could put whatever color hewanted on it. It wasn't like he could see the di erence with his cataracts, and it wasn't like anyonewould come visit him.***8th-grade fall break.My  rst excruciatingly drabby commute to Grandpa's house. We had moved closer to him, andDad decided that driving 2 hours every Sunday out to his farm was more enjoyable than going tochurch. As I sat in silence and observed the gradually waning bustle of the city, Dad asked,17"Have you seen how big your grandpa's farm is?""No.""They gave him a large piece of land when he came back from the war. He built the farm fromscratch. And he's gonna give it all away." He clicked his tongue. "That motherfucker's gettingdelirious.""From scratch?" I asked. "Is it a cow farm? Were they brown cows or white cows? Did his cowsmake milk?"Dad let out a light exhale. He said,"I grew up on that farm. I farmed on that farm. It's mine more than any of the dumb charitieshe's gonna give the money to."He paused to look for cars to make a left turn."Hey, since your grandma is gone this week, it's your job to take care of him, alright? Pretty easyjob, in my opinion. Good bonding time, too."I imagined Grandpa. A man with barrels for arms, brick-wall abs, and naturally tanned fromthe very top of his rounded nose all the way to the skin covering the intricate bone structure thatprotruded from his  rm feet."Sure!"After about half an hour, we got to his house.He was paralyzed waist down, gaunt, pale, with a colossal bald spot in the middle of his grayhead and a foul-smelling mouth that wouldn’t close. He studied me as I did him—my face, then downmy torso and then back up, staring straight into my eyes. His mouth spread into a wide grin. "Hello.Nice to meet you!"Dad reached out his hand and leaned down to pat Grandpa's shoulder, positioning himself toblock my grimace."How are you doing?""I'm doing just  ne. Your mother isn't here. She-""I heard, I heard." He looked at me. "C'mon now. Wheel him into his room. We don't wannakeep him in the sun for too long."I could feel Dad smirk as I wheeled Grandpa into his room. He pointed towards his bed."I can climb into it by myself. You see, that's the beauty of independence. There are di erentlevels to it. I may not be completely independent anymore, but I can still do stu  on my own."His chuckle came with a heavy rasp. He then looked towards me, eyes glimmering, and I let outa grunt. He continued,"When I was young, I had to do stu  all by myself. Your grandpa-" He stopped and laughed tohimself before continuing. "Well, I guess that's me now. Your great grandpa didn't care about me. I hadto do everything by myself. When I was 13 or so, I was chopping wood, and I accidentally chopped a18piece of my hand o ." I noticed him pausing, so I let out another grunt. "I looked down, and you couldsee my bones."I dropped him o . His slender arms reached for the far side of his bed, and he pulled himselfup. He fell back into his chair, but his arms were still stretched."Give me a little push, will ya?"The beauty of independence. I pushed against his two stumps as he tried again. This time, helanded with a thump, seeming unfazed as he positioned his head on his pillow. I started to walk away.Grandpa smacked the mattress."Come. Sit."I sat on the edge of his bed, facing away from him, to leave him space to move around. Thatwas a lie. I didn't want to be close to him. He said,"My dad whooped my ass when I chopped o  my hand. You kids have it so easy now. You don'tget your ass whooped, do you?" He tapped my buttcheeks and laughed again. He then pulled on myshirt sleeve."I bet your parents always get you new clothes. The shirt I'm wearing, I've owned for 10 years.It has holes in it, but who cares? Holes don't kill."I turned on the fan at the end of the bed, but it did little to drown out the noise."You feeling hot? I grew up in this weather without fans. We sweated like pigs; I'm serious."I pulled out my phone and watched TikToks out loud. He was unbothered. I yawned. Istomped my feet. Once, twice then in an alternating pattern. Still unbothered. I scratched the side ofhis wooden bed frame. I tapped it, then knocked on it, and then slammed it. Nothing. Nothing couldstop that man from talking.***Death, summer before collegeHe lay in a maroon casket, his hands covering the very liver that failed him just days before. Hedonned a long-sleeved, buttoned-up black shirt. His black silk pant legs were  lled with newspaper, orperhaps a prosthetic limb; I was hesitant to look because whatever was underneath could make theyellowing of his body that much more striking.I glanced at him, promising myself it would be the last, the same promise I had made  veseconds ago and  ve seconds before that.Dad stumbled in, hugged me with one hand and said,"Come here, kid. I love you so much. Your grandpa's giving me the house and the farm to payfor your college."A familiar stench quickly slithered through the paint cracks on the walls until it became part ofthe room's ambiance. I took my gaze away from Grandpa. As Dad's eyes met mine, they  uttered19uncontrollably, partially concealing his bloodshot pupils. I held onto his torso tightly with my handsand wrapped his hands loosely around my shoulder in case he needed help keeping his balance."Grandpa died, and you're still drinking?""It's a Saturday. Chill the fuck out, kid."He leaned forward. His gray stubble grazed my cheek as his head stooped to rest on mycollarbone. The weight felt uncomfortable."Are you going to sell Grandpa's farm? I thought you wanted to keep it.""I'm making a sacri ce–" He picked himself up from my shoulder and took a step back. Helifted his right arm and shoved his index  nger against my nose bridge. "–for you. Be grateful, kid." Iswatted his hand away. His head tipped forward, his mouth stopping just short of my right ear."I told you our weekly trips were gonna work."His body convulsed as he giggled. He let out a loud burp and stumbled out.***After Grandpa.I took down my hammock and walked inside. Dad was playing poker with his drinkingbuddies."Dad, let's go.""No, no, no. No. Let me  nish a few more rounds. I'm doubling your college funds. Begrateful." He shook with laughter and  nished the half-full shot glass beside his lap."Your grandpa's in heaven blessing the fuck out of me right now."

It has stood just so, at least, for the last few weeks, as couples, men with wicker hats andwomen in pigeon blue prairie dresses, passed over the creaking  oorboards. No one stayed for long, notfor long enough, at least, to wait for me to set my weathered feet onto the squishy, molding pumpkinthat lies beneath my stake; no one waits for me to stretch my legs as long as they will go, and lift mystraw hat with my straw  ngers to get a good look at the moon; beautiful tonight.It wasn’t until two weeks later that someone stayed overnight. I saw her in the window, litbrie y by the light of passing  re ies. She was beautiful, with her orange blouse and faded blue jeans.She belonged in my pumpkin patch. My button eyes wouldn’t move, sewed in place, as she movedaround the bedroom opening drawers and  ddling with blankets. It was a relief to have somethingother than the moon to watch tonight. I couldn’t go long without something beautiful.

As awriter, she enjoys analyzing contradictions and paradoxes.Writing Advice: Remember that your reader doesn't know the thoughts inside yourhead, you have to clarify what you mean so they don't make assumptions.Tahlia Little is a Health, Exercise, and Sport Studies (HESS) major.
