Good Friends and Honest Hearts is a romance story about two friends who decide to go on a date and see if they want to be together or not. The story follows the events of their first date, as well as telling some background on their friendship through flashbacks

Detection of Gravitational Wave Signals from Core-Collapse Supernovae Using Distributional Methodologies

    Get PDF
The goal of this paper is to quantify the capability of distributional tests to detect core-collapse supernovae using gravitational wave (GW) detectors. To date, no supernova GW detections have been made; the leading software for supernova signal analysis, Coherent Waveburst (cWB), looks only at the loudest ‘event’ in a period of time and forms its metrics for that single event. Our process instead looks to identify supernovae from a distribution of events. This statistical approach could extend the reach of the LIGO interferometers by giving more tolerance to low signal-to-noise ratios. With this increased range, the volume of supernovae we may be able to detect grows at a cubic rate. This method could produce a far more powerful supernovae detection pipeline that would be able to assist with not only new candidates, but analyzing the data collected in the past LIGO observation runs

The effects of Finasteride on parity in female drosophila melanogaster

    Get PDF
Finasteride has been used to treat male pattern baldness and benign prostate hyperplasia, and could potentially treat female pattern baldness and polycystic ovary syndrome. The effects that finasteride ingestion has on reproduction in female patients is still inconclusive. Using Drosophila melanogaster as a model, this study was designed to investigate the impact of finasteride on female fly reproduction and their offspring. The female flies in this study will be fed dosage equivalents of 0.5 mg, 1 mg, and 5 mg of finasteride, with a control group of females who consume no finasteride. The flies will be allowed to mate after consuming their respective dose of the drug and the viable offspring will be counted over the next three days. Additionally, viable male offspring will be allowed to mate with female flies to determine if they are impacted by the drug. This study predicts the results will indicate that finasteride will impact the reproductive ability of the females and their male offspring. We will support these results by using an RNA sequencer to investigate their genome. These results will further the database that could lead to determining if finasteride could be used to treat the disorders in human females

A Taxonomy Framework for Maritime Cybersecurity: A Demonstration Using the Automatic Identification System

    No full text
The maritime transportation system is increasingly a target of cyber attacks. This paper describes a taxonomy that supports the creation of adversarial cyber models, risk mitigation, and resiliency plans as applied to the maritime industry, using the Automatic Identification System as a specific illustration of the approach. This method has already been applied to the aviation sector; retooling it for a maritime example demonstrates its broad applicability to the transportation sector, in general

Asteroid Disruptions of the Datura Family

    Get PDF
To research the Datura Family of asteroids, a prewritten dynamical IDL code was run to track the orbital decay of asteroid fragments released in an asteroid disruption. Different particle sizes were used to analyze the outputs of each size including the semi-major axis, eccentricity, and inclination in order to observe how certain particle sizes’ orbital elements evolve. Using a young asteroid family like the Datura family gives more insight into their original structure and formation because the time is closer to before the asteroid’s breakup. We use these models to constrain the parameters of the dust by comparing the conditions to infrared satellite data sets. The semi-major axis utilizes Poynting-Robertson drag while the eccentricity and inclination are related to the effects of Jupiter. But all of these orbital elements relate to the role of the radiative forces. This research is important to understand potential Earth hazards from space

Flume Experiment Evaluating Shear Stresses Under Turbulent Flowing Conditions

    Get PDF
Shear stresses are produced when a fluid is flowing along a solid boundary layer. Shear stress measurements can be used to evaluate sediment and soil erosion transportation in natural bodies of water, like rivers. With this information, engineers improve risk assessment evaluation on earthen water- retaining structures and mitigate the dangers of overtopping. Inside the COAS Wave Lab water tank, a flume was built with a 5% slope, simulating a riverbed at an angle. At the 20ft marker, three shear stress sensors were installed in a working envelope. AC Drivers were used to control the flow from four pumps that provided the water flow on the wall shear sensors. The experiment data is collected using a LabView code and then processed in a MATLAB code that provides graphs and CSV files. A magnetic flowmeter and Micro PIV read by a laser and highspeed camera are used to collect velocity data on the velocity of the flow and compare it with the information gathered on the shear sensors. Multiple tests have been conducted to collect the best sample data sets from the experiment. A successful data sets will be used to create a Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) model using COMSOL Multiphysics. This model will demonstrate the flow velocity and wall shear stress ranges at a given flow rate, variable turbulence and roughness of the boundary layers

Benchtop Study of Autoregulatory Response Mechanism for Injection Jet Shunt Assisted Fontan Circulation

    Get PDF
Single ventricle anatomy (SV) is a congenial anomaly present in about 8% of all newborns with a Congenital Heart Defect (CHD). To survive, eligible children must undergo three palliative surgeries that eventually establish a viable SV physiology. The third stage of this treatment is the Fontan procedure. Despite positive outcomes over the years, the Fontan circulation still presents survival rates of less than 50%. A prevalent mode of failure occurs when patients display increased inferior vena cava pressure A novel alternative called “self-powered Fontan” is proposed by creating a bifurcating graft, or Injection Jet Shunt (IJS), to entrain the pulmonary flow and thus provide assistance while reducing the caval pressure. Given the complete absence of any reference for such an implementation, a realistic in-vitro model embedded with the autoregulatory systemic response is developed to cross-validate the in-silico observations. The benchtop study involves a mock flow loop (MFL) which incorporates patient generic IJS assisted Fontan phantoms. The MFL replicates a reduced lumped parameter model (LPM) of the Fontan circulation, partitioned in upper- and lower-systemic and left- and right-pulmonary compartments. Each compartment of the LPM is modeled with a three-element windkessel segment to retain physiological accuracy and fidelity. The automated “Hardware-in-the-Loop” HIL-based MFL is driven by catheter tracings of patient data using an automated Harvard Apparatus medical pump
