    No full text
The Apolipoprotein E Polymorphism, with its three main allelic variants (APOE2, APOE3, and APOE4), has gained prominence in genetic research due to its critical implications for human health. This review article offers a concise introduction to the APOE protein polymorphism and its influence on individual’s way of life. The APOE gene encodes apolipoprotein E, a critical component of lipid metabolism that is essential for both cholesterol transport and neuron repair in the central nervous system. APOE ℇ4 raises Alzheimer's risk, ℇ2 protects, and ℇ3 is neutral. Lifestyle choices, such as diet, exercise, and cognitive engagement, predict susceptibility to chronic illnesses like Alzheimer's and cardiovascular disease (CVD). For APOE ℇ4 carriers, a heart-healthy lifestyle can reduce elevated risk, while ℇ2 carriers, being less vulnerable, may need less intervention

Determination of the Risk of Oil and Gas Offshore Pipelines in Indonesia: A Risk-Based Analysis Approach for Developing Inspection Strategy Policy

    Get PDF
Indonesia has a target of producing 1 million BOPD of oil and 12 BSCFD of natural gas in 2030. The strategy for achieving the production target in 2030 is transformation from resources to production, accelerating chemical EOR, massive connectivity for finding large wells, and optimizing field production. In optimizing existing field production, one of the supporting factors is production facilities, so production facilities with good integrity are needed to minimize upplanned shutdowns. One of the oil and gas installations that pose a high risk is the installation of oil and gas pipelines. The existing pipeline installation in the Java Sea, from North Cirebon to the Seribu Islands, has an area of 8300 km2 and is operated by PT XYZ. Therefore, it requires complete and accurate inspection data to find out. This research method uses a modification of the Kent Mulhbauer scoring index. The risk level of the three subsea pipelines at Company XYZ, namely 4 in Gas Line Mike Mike, 8 in Gas Line Echo pipeline, and 8 in Gas Line Mike Mike pipeline, is found to be in the very highrisk category. The inspection strategy carried out for the third pipe with a very high risk category is visual inspection (ROV), freespan assessment, cathodic protection check (CP), UT thickness inspection on the riser and elbow (topside and subsea), and UT thickness inspection on the bottom pipe sea using the NACE ICDA method for thickness taking points and inspection periods once every 4 years or based on risk-based inspection (RBI). The cost and effort of examining the strategy will be assessed directly with the level of the risk category. Because of this, so that the inspection of the strategy can be optimal, effective, and efficient, it is divided into 3 (three) risk categories, namely low, medium, and high/very high, where the selection of strategy inspection is appropriate with the level of risk. The results of this study are expected to be a reference in making a policy or regulation to carry out regular inspections of underwater pipelines by using the risk analysis method to determine the inspection strategy

The Influence Of Maternal Infections On Congenital Heart Defect

    No full text
Congenital heart defects (CHDs) contribute significantly to heightened infant mortality rates. This review explores the intricate link between maternal infections and CHDs, emphasizing diverse factors influencing fetal development, such as bacterial, fungal, protozoan and viral agents. These infections pose reproductive health risks, potentially leading to complications like prematurity, stillbirth and heart defect to the fetus. The TORCH acronym (Toxoplasma, Other infections, Rubella, Cytomegalovirus, Herpes simplex) identifies infectious teratogens related to congenital issues, emphasizing vertical transmission through the placenta or ascending from the vagina. Rubella and Cytomegalovirus play a significant role in heart defects, particularly when maternal infections amplify CHD risk during pregnancy. Specific scrutiny is placed on Rubella and Cytomegalovirus for their impact on pregnancy outcomes and potential links to congenital heart defects, with preventive strategies discussed, including vaccination and antiviral therapy. The timing and severity of these infections are pivotal in determining their impact on fetal heart development. Environmental exposures and maternal nutrition are critical factors influencing fetal development. Maternal undernutrition in low- and middle-income countries associates with adverse pregnancy outcomes, including congenital heart defects. Emphasizing the importance of maintaining a nutritious maternal diet, rich in essential nutrients, is crucial for improved fetal health and successful pregnancy outcomes. This review offers insights into preventive measures and underscores the need for continued research to enhance prenatal care strategies

Generic medications serve as cost-effective alternatives to branded drugs, offering the same quality, effectiveness, and safety. They have a well-established track record for safety and efficacy, making them crucial in expanding global access to affordable healthcare. However, stringent standards set by the US Food and Drug Administration (USFDA) can pose challenges for generic drug approval, causing delays in the registration process. The USFDA has one of the most rigorous regulatory authorities globally, and the application submitted for generic drug registration is called an Abbreviated New Drug Application (ANDA). The USFDA's primary responsibility is to ensure that the drug's development, production, and testing adhere to stringent regulations while maintaining detailed records. To streamline the registration process, the International Conference on Harmonisation (ICH) has created a consistent framework for submitting applications, helping generic drug manufacturers meet the requirements for market approval in the US. This study aims to identify the regulatory challenges associated with generic drug approval in the United States. By extensively analyzing data from regulatory websites, government sources, and relevant literature surveys, a comprehensive understanding of the generic medicine approval and registration process in the country has been established. The examination of various criteria for generic drug clearance in the US has revealed that the FDA's regulatory standards are highly effective and well-defined, ensuring the safety and efficacy of these cost-effective alternatives. However, it is crucial for manufacturers to meet these rigorous standards to facilitate the availability of generic medications and enhance global access to affordable healthcare option

Background: In recent years, the prevalence of vegetarian and vegan diets has increased due to their associated health benefits. However, long-term avoidance of animal foods can lead to inadequate intake of essential nutrients like iron and vitamin B-12, critical for maintaining blood health. Iron deficiency is a widespread nutritional problem, especially in vegetarian diets, due to the reduced bioavailability of non-heme iron in plant foods. This study aimed to provide a detailed comparison of anemia frequency and other hematological parameters between vegetarian and omnivorous diets, thereby offering insights into the nutritional adequacy and health outcomes of these dietary habits. Methods: The study adhered to the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines, utilizing a prospective cohort from the UK Biobank. Participants aged 40–69 years were investigated for anemia prevalence in vegetarian and omnivorous diets. Data collection included informed consent procedures, a touch-screen questionnaire addressing sociodemographic and lifestyle factors, and a computer-assisted personal interview. Blood samples were collected for complete blood cell counts and hematological assays. Statistical analysis involved linear regression models, adjusted for age, sex, menopausal status, and smoking status. Results: The study found that vegetarians and other low or non-meat eaters had slightly lower age-adjusted hemoglobin concentrations and were more likely to be anemic compared to regular meat eaters. However, a well-balanced vegetarian diet did not significantly differ in iron-deficiency anemia incidence compared to omnivores. The study also noted differences in white blood cell parameters and platelet characteristics between diet groups, suggesting potential differences in immune function. Conclusion: The research concluded that a well-planned vegetarian diet does not increase the risk of iron-deficiency anemia compared to omnivorous diets. The key is dietary quality and appropriate planning, ensuring sufficient iron intake to prevent deficiency and support overall health. The findings contribute to the discussion about the adequacy of vegetarian diets and their role in preventing chronic conditions
