Volume Restoration in Mid-Facial Aging: A Quantitative Evaluation of the Efficacy of Hyaluronic Acid Gel Injections—The Imperative to Optimize the Injection Volume Based on Anatomical Considerations
Background: The attractiveness of the central area (the so-called mid-face area or middle third) has a strong impact on the observer, and the treatment of aging in this area is therefore considered a key component in facial rejuvenation. A standardized photographic and three-dimensional analysis was conducted in this observational study to determine the outcome of volumetric restoration procedures of the mid-face area with HA injection, providing an objective, repetitive, and reliable evaluation of this facial rejuvenation technique. Methods: In total, 47 patients were treated with two types of HA-based dermal fillers, and calibrated, stereoscopic images of the face were taken with volume reconstruction and analysis software performed before (t0), 45 days after HA implantation (t1), and at the check-up after the end of follow-up (t2). Results: In total, 39 out of 47 patients completed the study, which showed an overall volume restoration of 4.46 ± 1.34 mL at 45 days (t0–t1) after HA implantation, maintaining a value of 1.23 ± 0.68 mL at the end of the 318-day follow-up (t0–t2). Conclusions: The results of this study indicate that rejuvenation of the mid-facial region through volumetric restoration with an HA filler leads to an indirect volumetric effect that is clinically more significant than the actual injected volume and equally long-lasting
Phospholipid-Based Vesicular Systems as Carriers for the Delivery of Active Cosmeceutical Ingredients
Cosmeceuticals are cosmetic products containing biologically active ingredients claiming to have drug-like benefits. In recent years, there has been a growing global demand for cosmeceuticals focusing on visible improvement of skin appearance and health. However, modern consumers are increasingly more concerned about the performance and clinical efficacy of cosmetic formulations. One of the main disadvantages of cosmeceutical preparations is the poor transdermal delivery of active ingredients included in the formulation. In response to this challenge, many phospholipid-based nanovesicular delivery systems have been developed and tested in recent years to increase the skin penetration of active cosmetic molecules. Using LLMs to Infer Non-Binary COVID-19 Sentiments of Chinese Microbloggers
Studying public sentiment during crises is crucial for understanding how opinions and sentiments shift, resulting in polarized societies. We study Weibo, the most popular microblogging site in China, using posts made during the outbreak of the COVID-19 crisis. The study period includes the pre-COVID-19 stage, the outbreak stage, and the early stage of epidemic prevention. We use Llama 3 8B, a large language model, to analyze users’ sentiments on the platform by classifying them into positive, negative, sarcastic, and neutral categories. Analyzing sentiment shifts on Weibo provides insights into how social events and government actions influence public opinion. This study contributes to understanding the dynamics of social sentiments during health crises, fulfilling a gap in sentiment analysis for Chinese platforms. By examining these dynamics, we aim to offer valuable perspectives on digital communication’s role in shaping society’s responses during unprecedented global challenges
Adolescent-Reported Interparental Conflict and Related Emotional–Behavioral Difficulties: The Mediating Role of Psychological Inflexibility
Background/Objectives: Interparental conflict, with its multiple dimensions, represents a risk factor for youth mental health, triggering a series of cascading processes. Despite recent evidence highlighting that psychological inflexibility is a risk factor for adolescents’ psychopathology after stressful events, a limited number of studies have investigated its role in family conflicts. This study aims to investigate whether psychological inflexibility mediates the impact of conflict characteristics (intensity, frequency, and resolution) and threat appraisal of interparental conflict on the psychological difficulties of adolescent offspring. Methods: A sample of 195 adolescents aged between 15 and 19 years old completed the Children’s Perception of Interparental Conflict Scale, the Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire, and the Avoidance and Fusion Questionnaire for Youth on Google Forms. Results: The findings revealed that adolescents living in a family environment characterized by high levels of perceived interparental conflicts exhibit a wide spectrum of psychological difficulties, either emotional or behavioral, partially mediated by their psychological inflexibility. However, when conflict between parents is interpreted as threatening, adolescents’ inflexibility appears to mediate the relationship between conflict and psychological difficulties. Conclusions: While future studies are needed to better understand this association, psychological flexibility might represent a relevant treatment target in adolescents exposed to interparental conflict
A High-Sensitivity, Low-Noise, and Low-Hysteresis Tunneling Magnetoresistance Sensor Based on Structural Optimization of Magnetic Tunnel Junctions
Accurate measurement of magnetic fields holds immense significance across various disciplines, such as IC circuit measurement, geological exploration, and aerospace. The sensitivity and noise parameters of magnetic field sensors play a vital role in detecting minute fluctuations in magnetic fields. However, the current detection capability of tunneling magnetoresistance (TMR) is insufficient to meet the requirements for weak magnetic field measurement. This study investigates the impact of structural and fabrication parameters on the performance of TMR sensors. We fabricated series-connected TMR sensors with varying long-axis lengths of the elliptical cross-section and adjusted their performance by modifying annealing magnetic fields and magnetic field bias along the easy axis. The results demonstrate that TMR sensitivity decreases with increasing long-axis length, increases initially and then decreases with an annealing magnetic field, and decreases with a higher bias magnetic field along the easy axis. The voltage noise level of TMR sensors decreases as the long-axis length increases. Notably, the detection capability of TMR sensors exhibits a non-monotonic dependence on long-axis length. Moreover, we optimized the hysteresis of TMR sensors by applying a magnetic field bias along the easy axis. When the bias along the easy axis reached 16 Oe or −40 Oe, the hysteresis level was reduced to below 0.5 Oe. After encapsulating the TMR devices into a full Wheatstone bridge structure, we achieved a detection capability of 17 nT/Hz@1Hz. This study highlights that the detection capability of TMR devices is jointly influenced by fabrication parameters. By optimizing parameter configuration, this work provides theoretical guidance for further enhancing the performance of TMR devices in magnetic field measurements
Current Status of Prurigo Nodularis in Japan: A Retrospective Study Using a Health Insurance Claims Database
Background/Objectives: Prurigo nodularis (PN) is associated with considerable disease burden. Limited information exists about the epidemiology, treatment patterns, and impact of PN. This retrospective study used Japanese health insurance claims data to investigate the prevalence and incidence of PN from 2006 to 2021. Methods: A cross-sectional study design was used to estimate prevalence and incidence longitudinally; a cohort design was used to assess comorbidities, treatment patterns, and healthcare resource utilization (HCRU). Results: Over the study period, data from 297,545 to 10,081,414 individuals were available annually; in 2020, 1946 individuals were diagnosed with PN. The prevalence and incidence of PN showed little variation over the study period; in 2021, the prevalence was 41 per 100,000 persons. Although there was a tendency for a higher prevalence of PN in childhood, the prevalence and incidence were similar in other age groups and were slightly higher in females. Inflammatory skin diseases and atopic diathesis were common comorbidities. The most prescribed treatments for adults with PN were topical steroids (78%), oral antihistamines (68%), and moisturizers (54%). Oral steroids, macrolides, and psychotropics were prescribed to >10% of patients. Individuals with PN who also had atopic dermatitis (AD) received higher cumulative doses of stronger potency topical steroids, local steroid injections, and oral steroids than those without concomitant AD. Additionally, HCRU was higher in individuals with AD. Conclusions: Although patients are usually treated according to the guidelines, there is an unmet need for more effective treatments for PN due to the frequent use of intensive and late-line treatments
A New Ensemble Strategy Based on Surprisingly Popular Algorithm and Classifier Prediction Confidence
Traditional ensemble methods rely on majority voting, which may fail to recognize correct answers held by a minority in scenarios requiring specialized knowledge. Therefore, this paper proposes two novel ensemble methods for supervised classification, named Confidence Truth Serum (CTS) and Confidence Truth Serum with Single Regression (CTS-SR). The former is based on the principles of Bayesian Truth Serum (BTS) and introduces classification confidence to calculate the prior and posterior probabilities of events, enabling the recovery of correct judgments provided by a confident minority beyond majority voting. CTS-SR further simplifies the algorithm by constructing a single regression model to reduce computational overhead, making it suitable for large-scale applications. Experiments are conducted on multiple binary classification datasets to evaluate CTS and CTS-SR. Experimental results demonstrate that, compared with existing ensemble methods, both of the proposed methods significantly outperform baseline algorithms in terms of accuracy and F1 scores. Specifically, there is an average improvement of 2–6% in accuracy and an average increase of 2–4% in F1 score. Notably, on the Musk and Hilly datasets, our method achieves a 5% improvement compared to the traditional majority voting approach. Particularly on the Hilly dataset, which generally exhibits the poorest classification performance and poses the greatest prediction challenges, our method demonstrates the best discriminative performance. validating the importance of confidence as a feature in ensemble learning
An Evaluation of Soybean Protein Concentrate as a Replacement for Fish Meal with Methionine Supplementation in Diets for Hybrid Sturgeon (Acipenser baerii ♀ × A. schrenckii ♂)
Soy protein concentrate (SPC) is a cost-effective alternative to fish meal (FM) in aquaculture, but its deficiency in essential amino acids, particularly methionine, limits its application. This study evaluated the effects of methionine supplementation on growth, liver and intestinal health, and muscle quality in hybrid sturgeon (Acipenser baerii ♀ × A. schrenckii ♂) fed SPC-based diets. Four diets were formulated: an FM control diet, and SPC diets supplemented with 0% (M0), 0.25% (M2.5), and 0.50% (M5) methionine. Replacing FM with SPC without methionine (M0) significantly reduced weight gain and the protein efficiency ratio (PER) while increasing the feed conversion ratio (FCR) and hepatic lipid accumulation. Methionine supplementation (M5) restored growth performance, the PER, and muscle texture to levels comparable to the FM group. Intestinal enzyme activities (lipase and trypsin), villus height, and goblet cell counts significantly improved in the M5 group. Gene expression analysis showed that M5 upregulated tight junction genes (claudin1, occludin) and anti-inflammatory genes (tgfβ, lysozyme) while reducing pro-inflammatory cytokines (il1β, il8). In the liver, M5 reduced oxidative stress markers such as malondialdehyde (MDA) and improved antioxidant enzyme activities (SOD, CAT) while optimizing lipid metabolism, as evidenced by lower triglyceride (TG) and total cholesterol (TC) levels. Muscle quality analysis showed that M5 significantly increased muscle hardness, chewiness, and fiber density compared to M0. In conclusion, methionine supplementation at 0.50% effectively mitigates the negative effects of SPC, improving growth, liver and intestinal health, and muscle quality in hybrid sturgeon
Alveolar Bile and Light Chain Immunoglobulin Depositions as an Unusual Complication of Transjugular Liver Biopsy Resulting in Bilhemia in a Patient with Multiple Myeloma
Background: A 69-year-old man with multiple myeloma and left-sided heart failure presented to the hospital with a two-month fever. Method: A transjugular liver biopsy was performed due to the rapid progression of liver failure. The procedure was complicated by an intraperitoneal hemorrhage. The bleeding was managed expectantly. Result: Significantly elevated serum bilirubin levels occurred on the 13th day after liver biopsy. Increasing serum bilirubin levels were observed until the patient’s death due to a biliovenous fistula at the liver biopsy site. Simultaneously, his slightly elevated liver enzymes returned to normal. The patient died 23 days after liver biopsy due to acute respiratory distress syndrome. Fistulous communication between the biliary tree and the hepatic venous system with subsequent bile leakage into the venous system (bilhemia) can lead to bile deposition in the lungs. Bile deposition in the lungs may potentiate and accelerate the development of diffuse alveolar damage with hyaline membranes. Conclusions: Lambda and kappa light chain deposition in the pulmonary alveoli in patients with multiple myeloma can mimic typical hyaline membranes
Power System Loss Reduction Strategy Considering Security Constraints Based on Improved Particle Swarm Algorithm and Coordinated Dispatch of Source–Grid–Load–Storage
Coordinating various controllable distributed resources to reduce network losses is crucial to the secure and economical operation of modern power systems. This paper proposes a bi-level optimization model for power system loss reduction based on “source-grid-load-storage” coordinated optimization. The upper level aims to minimize the total annual planning cost of the system, determining the location and capacity of distributed photovoltaic systems, energy storage devices, and electric vehicle charging stations. The lower level aims to minimize the load curve smoothness and node voltage deviation of the distribution network, optimizing intraday operation strategies. For this complex optimization problem, this paper designs a particle swarm optimization (PSO) algorithm with adaptive weights and improved evolutionary strategies. The simulation results of case studies demonstrate that the proposed method has significant loss reduction effects in distribution networks of various scales and complexities. The algorithm performance comparison results show that the improved particle swarm algorithm outperforms traditional algorithms in terms of solution quality and computational efficiency, providing an effective solution for the coordinated optimization of “source-grid-load-storage”
