‘My trust in strangers has disappeared completely’ : How hate crime, perceived risk, and the concealment of sexual orientation affect fear of crime among Swedish LGBTQ students

    No full text
Previous research has established correlations between anti-LGBTQ hate crime, fear of crime, perceived victimization risk, and the concealment of sexual orientation. Aside from correlations, the relationships between these variables remain poorly understood. Therefore, the aim of the present study is to explore the relationships between anti-LGBTQ hate crime, perceived risk, and the concealment of sexual orientation in relation to fear of crime. Based on previous research and theory, the authors hypothesize (1) that experiences of hate crime victimization increase fear of crime, perceived victimization risk, and the concealment of sexual orientation; (2) that high levels of perceived risk result in high fear of crime and a more prevalent concealment of orientation; and (3) that the concealment of sexual orientation results in lower fear of crime. The sample consists of LGBTQ students enrolled at a Swedish university. The study uses a mixed method approach, combining survey data (N = 353) and interview data (N = 10). The data are assessed using path analysis and thematic analysis. The path analysis supported the authors’ hypothesis regarding experiences of anti-LGBT hate crime, perceived risk, and fear of crime. The qualitative analysis showed that victims of hate crimes had a reduced ability to process negative emotions because they experienced other traumatic life events parallel to the victimization. Similarly, feelings of being reduced to a negative stereotype resulted in higher levels of both fear of crime and perceived risk. Finally, the path analysis rejected the hypothesis that the concealment of sexual orientation results in lower fear of crime. Rather than being an agency-driven and functional fear response, the interview data showed that while these practices reduced victimization risk, they negatively impacted the overall health of the participants through feelings of lack of authenticity and self-censorship

Zoöp Futures : Towards an organisational framework for ecological cooperation between humans and more-than-humans

    No full text
This paper describes the Zoöp model, an organisational framework fostering regenerative relationships between humans and nonhumans. With escalating ecological crises, traditional anthropocentric decision-making requires a shift towards equitable, multispecies collaboration. The Zoöp model translates more-than-human theories into practical organisational strategies for sustainable futures. Using the Het Nieuwe Instituut (HNI) as a case study, this paper examines how the Zoöp model fosters regenerative actions within a European cultural institution. The model constructs participatory futures, embedding multispecies interests directly into organisational processes to address gaps in current sustainability efforts. By bridging organisational theory, environmental sustainability, and futures studies, the Zoöp model advocates for reparative, just systems that prioritise ecological health and multispecies well-being. This paper highlights the model's potential to promote a philosophical shift, recognising the intrinsic value of all living beings in decision-making processes

Urban Community Gardens in Oslo city : Exploring diversity and social cohesion

    No full text
The Age of Diversity as Vertovec referred to has been marked not only by the growth of population in the cities but also by the increment of a diverse and ethnically heterogeneous demographic. As urban areas continue to grow rapidly in all regions, this diverse context reconfigures human relations between and within urban societies. Thus, diversity can be seen from two dimensions, one in which a diverse population brings a positive force for an urban economic development or, one dimension in which diversity can be seen as the source of community tensions and challenges for urban development.By bringing urban and migration studies into dialogue, the study through two distinctive methodologies (semi-structured interviews and participant observation), explores Community Gardens as urban spaces in Oslo city and tries to find out if these urban spaces are creating social cohesion in a diverse city. The theoretical framework of this thesis is presented as follows: firstly, the diversity concept which is the lens through which this research is carried out will be discussed. Secondly the concept of social cohesion will be presented followed by the social capital concept. This latter will be used as an analytical tool that helps us to understand the empirical material. Results from this comparative case-study work shows how urban community gardens in Oslo contribute to generate bonding, bridging and linking social capital, thus, helping to build social cohesion. The location, the CG spatial characteristics, and the management of the community gardens seem to be distinctive variables that might contribute to the variation in the composition of these capitals among the case-study gardens. This thesis also suggests directions for future research and inform urban policy about the importance of the inclusive potential of the UCG for the development of a city with a diverse population

The Effects of Handwriting on Different Dimensions of Reading and Writing Development in the Earliest Years of School: A Systematic Knowledge Overview

    No full text
The aim of this systematic knowledge overview is to shed light on what research says about how different writing modalities affect the initial reading and writing development. The background for the chosen area of challenge is the vague formulation in the current curriculum regarding what extent students should develop within different writing modalities. More specifically, our aim is to find out what importance handwriting has within this field.  By reading, analysing and discussing different studies systematically, we have collected material from ten separate research results. These studies have been carried out both nationally and internationally and are for the most part quantitative and interventional. The research we have accessed shows that handwriting has a confirmed positive effect on some areas of the initial reading and writing development. These include letter knowledge as well as text length, writing fluency and writing speed. However, these results are not wholly unchallenged. Our conclusion is that the two writing modalities concerning our subject matter should not be seen as being opposite to one another. Although, initial intensified handwriting could lead to students becoming more effective writers further on, both when writing by hand and typing/keyboarding. Explicit experiences within both modalities are needed, however

In What Ways can Digital Media be Used as a Resource in Religious Education?

    No full text
Digital media has become integrated into education and is now a significant part of teaching. It offers valuable opportunities for learning and developing critical thinking skills. Previous research highlights how digital media can be engaging and motivating for students, as it allows them to meet their individual needs without unnecessary complications. At the same time, digital media can have negative effects, such as overdependence on accessible tools, such as Artificial Intelligence (AI) which may lead to a decline in personal skills. This examination focuses on prior research regarding the use of digital media in education, as well as an exploration of its potential benefits and limitations. The findings of this study indicate that the use of digital media is a controversial topic, presenting both advantages and challenges. It is recommended that digital media be employed with careful planning and consideration to avoid misuse that could hinder, rather than enhance, the educational process

    No full text
Background: Each year 190 of 100 000 persons suffer from breast cancer, where mastectomy is the main form of treatment. Mastectomy means that the whole breast gets removed with surgical interventions. This leads to a permanent change on the body for women that have undergone mastectomy and can affect the breast  function and view on intimacy. The main symptom of breast cancer is a lump on  the breast. Through information and education from the nurse the care during a  mastectomy can be facilitated. To be able to support the patients and provide good care after undergoing mastectomy requires the nurse to have knowledge and  understanding about women's experience of the surgical procedure. Aim: The  study aims to describe women's experiences after mastectomy due to breast  cancer. Method: The litterateur study was based on twelve qualitative articles  obtained from the databases Cinahl and Pubmed. The articles were quality assessed by a model from the state’s preparation for medical and social evaluation  and was analysed according to the chosen method. Results: Four categories were identified. The first category was Feelings of loss with the associated  subcategories; loss of the breast and loss of femininity. The second category was  The changed body with the associated subcategories; changed body image and  changed intimacy. The third category was The meaning of support with the  associated subcategories; support from family, support from health care and  support from religion. The fourth and last category was Life that continues with  the associated subcategories changed clothing and hopefulness. Conclusion: The  results of this literature study emerged into several experiences that affect women  after undergoing mastectomy. The main experience was feelings of loss, changes in body image and changed intimacy. Through increased understanding and  knowledge the undergraduate nurse can improve the nursing care for the specific patient group.

    No full text
Background: Self-harm behavior is defined as deliberate harm to one's own body without suicidal intent and often co-occurs with psychiatric diagnoses such as post-traumatic stress disorder and borderline personality disorder. For nurses, caring for these patients can be challenging, with the approach to care playing a crucial role. Aim: The aim of the study was to highlight nurses' experiences of caring for patients with self-harm behavior. Method: A qualitative literature review based on ten scientific articles retrieved from the Cinahl and Psychinfo databases. The articles were quality-assessed using the SBU quality assessment tool and analyzed based on Popenoe (2021). Results: The results are presented based on two categories and five subcategories. The two categories are: The experience of increased need for knowledgeand Factors influencing the care of patients with self-harm. The five subcategories are: Uncertainty and lack of competence, Lack of education, The importance of care relationships, Person-centered care and Work environment. Conclusion: Nurses perceive caring for patients with self-harm behavior as complex and demanding. Improving care requires more education, support, and resources. By addressing nurses’ needs, the approach to care can be transformed, ultimately benefiting the patient’s recovery

Upper Secondary School Students' Experiences of Education in Sexuality, Consent and Relationships
