Seasonal rockfall risk analysis in a touristic island: Application to the Tramuntana Range (Mallorca, Spain)

    Get PDF
Rockfalls are an ever-present possibility in the mountainous context of the Tramuntana Region (Mallorca, Spain). Recent events have shown the high potential for direct and indirect impact on the safety of people and economic activities, lasting for weeks or even months. In the present study, we start from a probabilistic assessment of the rockfall hazard (spatial propensity and temporal recurrence), based on a detailed historical record of occurrences and rockfall modelling, which is subsequently superimposed on three exposure scenarios and on a social vulnerability assessment. Exposure considers the floating population at three seasons of the year, given the area's high tourist aptitude. Vulnerability considers on the one hand the intrinsic characteristics of individuals and, on the other, the characteristics of the surrounding territory that act to facilitate emergency operations, mitigate the immediate impact and enhance rapid recovery. Due to the characteristics of the island and the spatial distribution of tourism, the results show that the highest density of rockfall trajectories potentially affect areas of high exposure, whose access by emergency services is complex. Not being, in general, the areas of highest individual criticality, those areas have in most situations low support capability installed or nearby. The results constitute a useful tool for emergency and risk management planning in multiple sectors linked to risk governance. Despite the high geographic detail of the analysis, these studies do not replace exposure and vulnerability analysis at the building level, for which the contribution of georeferenced Census data is fundamental

This article makes considerations about Cais das Artes, located in the city of Vitória, Espírito Santo, Brazil, and which has been under construction since 2007, and the National Coach Museum (2008- 2016) in Lisbon, Portugal. Both projects were designed by the award-winning Espírito Santo architect Paulo Mendes da Rocha. The research seeks to highlight the practice of architecture and proposes an investigation into museums as the main focus. Therefore, the text tries to emphasize the statement to the praxis, even though the Cais das Artes is, today, a monument to ruin. These two cultural facilities, with very similar characteristics and located in areas marked by port dynamics, which give an extraordinary dimension to the place, encourage a dialogical reading in which, in my opinion, the social, museological and cultural fields meet. Therefore, I seek to demonstrate the social place of the museum, based on the sociomuseology school of thought, centered on architecture, which amalgamates what is eectively in dispute: museum, city and society

We will propose an anthology overview of several (post)migrant novels to highlight the recurrence of the topos of literary culture as a spring of assimilation to the host country and desire for empowerment, especially for the status of women. It will turn out that the dynamic of assimilation often remains the unthought of literary criticism, more tempted by the dominant doxa of the insurmountable cultural and differential hiatus, or of the ideological and exotic othering potential

Challenges and Solutions for Sustainable Food Systems: The Potential of Home Hydroponics

    No full text
The global food system is currently facing significant challenges that make it unsustainable and environmentally harmful. These challenges not only threaten food security but also have severe negative impacts on the environment. Efforts have been made to reform agrifood systems and align them with the built environment, but emerging obstacles have revealed the weaknesses in these systems, particularly in less self-sufficient countries. This review outlines the primary environmental problems associated with global agrifood systems and the challenges in promoting food security. It emphasizes that the increasing global population and urbanization need rational and equitable changes in food systems, including production, distribution, storage, and consumption. These changes should aim to minimize environmental impacts by protecting and efficiently utilizing natural resources such as air, water, soil, and biodiversity, reducing food loss and waste, and mitigating pollution that contributes to ecosystem degradation and climate change. In this context, hydroponics emerges as a sustainable, plant-based food production technique that can be employed as a solution in urban areas. It can be implemented in domestic microproduction systems, serving as a complementary alternative to conventional food production methods. This study also provides insights into the challenges that need to be addressed in order to enhance home hydroponic systems. The integration of hydroponics into urban food production offers the potential to tackle both food security and environmental sustainability issues, providing a path toward more resilient and efficient food systems. This work was supported by FCT—Fundação para a Ciência e Tecnologia, I.P. by project reference UIDB/04004/2020 and DOI identifier 10.54499/UIDB/04004/2020 (https://doi.org/10.54499/UIDB/04004/2020), to the Centre for Functional Ecology—Science for People & the Planet

A IA e o BIM: "Magia" ou algoritmos?

    No full text
