Women and the Sikh Diaspora in California

This book charts the transoceanic history of South Asian women in California through their speech and songs across the twentieth century. Nicole Ranganath reimagines the history of the South Asian diaspora through an examination of gender and the dynamic interplay of water and land in the cultural history of Sikhs, a faith and cultural community that emerged in the Punjab region of north South Asia over 550 years ago. It shows how the history and music of transoceanic communities, in this case Sikhs, spilled beyond the boundaries of regions, empires and nation-states. It emphasizes the heterogeneity of the South Asia diaspora by uncovering the distinct history of women’s migration experiences, as well as an alternative oceanic imaginary among Sikhs that envisions unity in the cosmos. It foregrounds the pivotal role that women played in transforming Sikh communities in California through songs and female affinities. Based on six years of fieldwork in rural northern California, it explores song as a window into the interior lives of Sikh women through their performance of diverse genres: gadar anti-colonial songs, folk music, hymns, and autobiographical songs. This sonic history of South Asian women in the diaspora dislodges dominant paradigms in diaspora studies and oceanic humanities that depict men as mobile and women as stationary. Masculinities and Queer Perspectives in Transitional Justice

This book addresses the theory and practice of transitional justice through the lens of masculinities and queer perspectives. What and where are the intersections between masculinities and queer theories and frameworks for better understanding lived experiences of violence, justice, and transitions? How can masculinities and queer perspectives enhance and "complexify" our understandings of the intersections between gender, sexualities, armed conflict and (post-)conflict transitions? Incorporating masculinities and queer perspectives in transitional justice in tandem, and alongside one another, this book contributes empirically, conceptually, and methodologically to an exploration of gender in processes of dealing with violent pasts. More specifically, and by taking on the task of combining, bringing into conversation, and utilizing both masculinities and queer perspectives, the book aims to facilitate and contribute toward more inclusive, holistic, and intersectional approaches of gender in dealing with the past. Enhancing Global Governance in a Fragmented World

This open access book explores the ‘polycrisis’ currently affecting nearly all nations by exploring key themes such as multilateralism and globalization from the perspective of think tanks from nearly every continent, searching for various solutions to the ills that currently plague the world and a way to create a future in which everyone benefits. As China’s preeminent non-governmental think tank, the Center for China and Globalization (CCG) has invited 30 leading figures from the global think tank community to sift through the myriad layers of multilateralism and global governance and provide a contextual analysis of major themes both from a theoretical and practical perspective, focusing on China in detail, but alsoexamining the world as a whole. Think tanks are essential in analyzing current trends and providing potential solutions that aid governments, international organizations and business in finding solutions that are beneficial to all. As a key source of innovative ideas, they have become even more valuable today as the pace of change accelerates, geopolitical complexity increases and the world has to deal with global crises that no country can address on their own. A common, central theme through all of the 25 essays in this book is the need for a more universal, inclusive and multilateral approach to reforming global governance.
