Factor Input Prices and Unemployment in Uganda

    Get PDF
Examining the impact of input costs on unemployment in Uganda, this study employed an ARDL model based on the Efficiency Wage Theory. Analyzing annual data from 1987 to 2019 and controlling for economic size and currency value, the research found that lending interest rates, real exchange rates, and GDP have a short-term negative impact on unemployment, suggesting an initial rise. However, the study highlights a positive long-run relationship between these factors and unemployment, indicating their potential to contribute to lower unemployment over time. Interestingly, no significant short-run or long-run effect of global crude oil prices on Uganda's unemployment was identified. These findings suggest that while central bank policies promoting lower interest rates can encourage short-term investment and potentially lower unemployment, long-term economic growth is also crucial. Furthermore, the lack of impact from oil prices underscores the need for Ugandan policymakers to diversify the economy beyond oil dependence for sustainable unemployment reduction

    Get PDF
Social media is used in many aspects of modern life. Lately, higher education has also expanded its focus to include globalized online learning using social media. Educational establishments have acknowledged that social media gives students a chance to interact with teachers, other students, and higher authorities. However, there is little information available on it in educational settings, especially in the classroom. Only a small number of studies in Malaysia have specifically examined social media, even though many studies have looked at how social media influences the academic performance of university students. Therefore, we conducted this quantitative study to determine whether social media usage mediates the relationship between educational variables and academic performance among students enrolled in Malaysian public higher education institutions. We conducted a cross-sectional study at UiTM Segamat, involving 388 respondents. The findings demonstrate that social media usage mediates the relationship between students' performance and perceived usefulness, perceived enhanced communication, and resource sharing. Social media use does not mediate perceived ease of use, collaborative learning, or perceived enjoyment of students' performance. To use social media as a teaching tool, particularly in higher education institutions, the research findings bring new knowledge to the field. The higher education community may share knowledge anytime and anywhere. This platform allows educators and students to interact with one another after learning sessions, which will help the student succeed academically

The Influence of Sustainability Reporting in Enhancing Firm Value

    Get PDF
There is a growing concern about sustainability reporting as stakeholders increasingly recognize the importance of sustainable and ethical business practices. Investors, consumers, and regulatory bodies are demanding greater transparency and accountability from firms regarding their sustainability and ethical corporate behavior. Accordingly, the objective of this paper is to examine the significant influence that sustainability reporting can exert on a firm's financial performance and overall worth. By employing three predominant theoretical frameworks: stakeholder theory, legitimacy theory, and signaling theory. The findings mostly show that sustainability reporting increases firm value. Reputational capital, investor confidence, and long-term financial performance improve for firms that report their sustainability performance. However, sustainability reporting affects business value through complicated mechanisms that include regulatory contexts, industry characteristics, and disclosure quality. Although positive associations were found, sustainability reporting's effects on firm value need further studies. Research should uncover the mediating variables and contextual elements that promote this association. Researchers can provide more detailed insights into how sustainability reporting might strategically boost firm value, improving corporate sustainability and financial performance. The findings of this study would provide an important contribution to firms and stakeholders. Firms that prioritize sustainability contribute to the well-being of communities and the environment. Further, with greater transparency, the public can hold companies accountable for their actions, and support firms that demonstrate genuine commitment to sustainability

    Get PDF
The government has integrated sustainability management into its agenda to rectify environmental degradation. A new study called “sustainability entrepreneurship”, which relates sustainability management with entrepreneurial endeavors has also been established. Sustainability management is crucial because it allows small and medium enterprises (SMEs) to develop competitive advantages by fulfilling customers’ demand for sustainable products. However, the participation of SMEs in sustainability management is low and many of them fail to disclose their environmental information. This phenomenon has caused problems in encouraging sustainability management commitment among SMEs and failure in achieving 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).  Therefore, this paper aims to unravel the relationships of institutional elements on proclivity on sustainability entrepreneurship among SMEs. Based on a review of existing literature on Institutional factors, a proposed model was developed to assess proclivity towards sustainability entrepreneurship among SMEs. The result of this study would be useful to create the knowledge of institutional theory and the actual behavior of proclivity of sustainability entrepreneurship, to create new knowledge in the future. This research contributes to universities, policymakers and business practitioners. As for universities, it helps to develop a new model to enrich the literature in entrepreneurship studies. In terms of policymakers and business practitioners, it helps to identify important factors in developing true sustainability entrepreneurs among SMEs. &nbsp
