C.F.: Experimental investigation of a novel blast wave mitigation device. Shock Vib. 16(6), 543–553 (2009) 22 A. Britan et al

Abstract. A novel blast wave mitigation device was investigated experimentally in this paper. The device consists of a pistoncylinder assembly. A shock wave is induced within the cylinder when a blast wave impacts on the piston. The shock wave propagates inside the device and is reflected repeatedly. The shock wave propagation process inside the device lengthens the duration of the force on the base of the device to several orders of magnitude of the duration of the blast wave, while it decreases the maximum pressure over an order of magnitude. Two types of experiments were carried out to study the blast wave mitigation device. The first type of experiments was done with honeycomb structures protected by the blast wave mitigation device. Experimental results show that the device can adequately protect the honeycomb structure. A second type of experiments was done using a Hopkinson bar to measure the pressure transmitted through the blast wave mitigation device. The experimental results agree well with results from a theoretical model

APPLICATION OF MICROWAVE RADIATION FOR PREPARATION METAL OXIDE CATALYSTS

The use of microwave energy for heating substances is widespread in many areas of industry. The special features of the electromagnetic infl uence on the substance can be attributed even heating in the entire volume, high speed and low inertia of the heat, and the possibility of selective heating. Microwave radiation is used in catalysis, particularly for the synthesis of metal oxide catalysts with desired properties. The use of microwave energy has different technical solutions: the activation of the catalyst, microwave hydrothermal synthesis, microwave drying, sintering of the catalyst components. In this review are presented as examples of the use of microwave energy for the synthesis of catalysts known from the literature, as well as original research on the application of microwave energy to the example preparation aluminum-chromium catalyst dehydrogenation of lower paraffi ns

FT-IR spectromicroscopy of mammalian cell cultures during necrosis and apoptosis induced by drugs, Spectroscopy

Abstract. FT-IR is used in the field of biology and medicine to detect bimolecular changes in disordered cells and tissues. In this report, using FT-IR microscopy, we characterize changes in apoptotic and necrotic Jurkat cells with respect to normal cells. The analysis of deconvoluted regions of the FT-IR spectra showed significant differences compared to the controls in three spectral regions. In particular, the apoptotic cells were characterized by an increase in the absorption at 2925 cm −1 , due to the asymmetric CH 2 -stretching (νasCH 2 ) of membrane lipids whereas the spectral areas ratio (A 1654 /A 1629 ) of the amide I region indicated an increase in apoptotic cells of more α-helical structures with respect to of β-sheet content. Interestingly, apoptotic cells showed the appearance of a peak around 1743 cm −1 , ν(C=O) assigned to acid ester. Because no other similar increase for lipid bands was observed, the increase of A 1745 is not simply due to an increase in the number of lipid molecules or their density but could also be indicative as marker of apoptosis. These spectral changes were not observed in necrotic Jurkat cells

Rapid Acting Insulin Use and Persistence among Elderly Type 2 Diabetes Patients Adding RAI to Oral Antidiabetes Drug Regimens

We examined the real-world utilization and persistence of rapid acting insulin (RAI) in elderly patients with type 2 diabetes who added RAI to their drug (OAD) regimen. Insulin-naïve patients aged ≥65 years, with ≥1 OAD prescription during the baseline period, who were continuously enrolled in the US Humana Medicare Advantage insurance plan for 18 months and initiated RAI were included. Among patients with ≥2 RAI prescriptions (RAIp), persistence during the 12-month follow-up was assessed. Multivariate logistic regression analyses identified factors affecting RAI use and persistence. Of 3734 patients adding RAI to their OAD regimen, 2334 (62.5%) had a RAIp during follow-up. Factors associated with RAIp included using ≤2 OADs; cognitive impairment, basal insulin use during follow-up; and higher RAI out-of-pocket costs (36 to <56 versus 0to0 to 6.30). Patients were less likely to persist with RAI when on ≤2 OADs versus ≥3 OADs and when having higher RAI out-of-pocket costs (36 to <56 versus 0to0 to 6.30) and more likely to persist when they had cognitive impairment and basal insulin use during follow-up. Real-world persistence of RAI in insulin-naïve elderly patients with type 2 diabetes was very poor when RAI was added to an OAD regimen

Abstract Physical modes in the management of type II diabetic were analysed with aerobic versus resisted exercise training in this study among 150 subjects on diabetic medication. 12 weeks pre and post fasting blood sugar was recorded along with quality of life score of all the subjects. While RET subjects benefited twice than aerobic subjects with QL as major findings of this study which can be included in the diabetic care

Abstract. We use Laplace transform methods to examine the optimal exercise boundary for shout options, which give the holder the right to lock in the profit to date while retaining the right to benefit from any further upside. The result of our analysis is an integro-differential equation for the location of this optimal exercise boundary. This equation is a nonlinear Fredholm equation, or more specifically, an Urysohn equation of the first kind. Applying an inverse Laplace transform to this equation allows us to find the behavior of the free boundary close to expiry. The results are given for both call and put shout options
