Music, Ritual, and Community Practice: An Applied Ethnomusicological Analysis of Kelentangan Belian Namang in Kedang Ipil's Tepung Tawar Tradition

    Get PDF
This research highlights how applied ethnomusicology contributes to cultural preservation through the documentation of traditional music. By combining traditional ethnographic techniques with modern analytical tools, the approach respects indigenous knowledge systems while producing accessible materials for both academics and local communities. This hybrid method not only preserves cultural heritage but also strengthens its transmission to younger generations. The study also reveals the intricate dynamics between tradition and modernity within indigenous societies, where customary authorities, informal knowledge, and formal education intersect. These tensions reflect broader social changes and the challenges of maintaining cultural identity when traditional learning environments are disrupted. Applied ethnomusicology emerges as a valuable tool for both community development and cultural sustainability. Collaboration between researchers and communities results in resources that serve academic inquiry while reinforcing local cultural identities. This participatory method reflects the principle of reciprocity that underpins applied ethnomusicology. Moreover, the findings show that documentation alone is not enough. Effective cultural preservation requires adaptive strategies that actively involve local communities, promote intergenerational learning, and respond to contemporary realities without compromising cultural integrity. The study underscores both the resilience and the fragility of indigenous knowledge systems and calls for context-sensitive approaches to ensure their continued vitality

Transkulturasi Naskah Pinangan Anton Chekhov: Eksplorasi Dramaturgi Visual dan Kritik Sosial dalam Teater Indonesia

    Get PDF
Kata kunci: Rekontekstualisasi, Penafsiran Teater, Dramaturgi, Naskah Chekhov, Kritik Sosial AbstractThe Transculturation of Anton Chekhov's The Proposal: Visual Dramaturgy and Social Criticism in Indonesian Theatre. This article discusses the process of visual and dramaturgical interpretation in a theatrical performance that recontextualizes Anton Chekhov's The Proposal script into an Indonesian cultural context. The purpose of this study is to explore how the classic Russian drama text can be artistically translated into a local space through a directorial approach, the selection of actor playing styles, artistic design, and the use of visual symbols. This topic was chosen because Pinangan contains social irony that is relevant to the dynamics of the contemporary Indonesian middle class, but requires rereading in order to be accepted by local audiences. This study uses an artistic research approach with the practice-as-research method, namely a method of creating works that starts from an exploration of literary texts (the Pinangan script by Anton Chekhov), which is then translated into a theatrical performance through creative stages. The results of the study show that the Indonesian version of the Pinangan theatrical performance not only changes the language and setting aspects, but also adds new nuances of social criticism, strengthens situational comedy, and creates an intercultural dialogue between the original text and today's audience. The dramaturgical interpretation carried out successfully re-presents the substance of the script in a fresh way without losing the Chekhovian essence, while strengthening the local message in Indonesian theatrical practice. Keywords: Recontextualization, Theater Interpretation, Dramaturgy, Chekhov's Script, Social Criticis

When it comes to cultural richness, it can’t be denied that Indonesia has abundant amount of cultural products. As Indonesian citizens who love culture, the diversity of existing cultural products should always be preserved and developed in order to maintain the echo of the existence of a distinct culture. It goes well with a statement that says, “culture is a reflection of national character and identity”. Referring to the meaning of the word “preserve” whic is maintaining the philosophical values as they are in an existing culture, while “developing” in this context means taking the values from the original Indonesian culture and then combining them with new external elements without losing their very own characteristics. This scientific text explains the process of designing a short animation in the form of a keris which had been combined with a touch of fantasy, and then displayed using augmented reality (AR) system. This animation plays its role to developing one of the Javanese cultural product, especially keris, without losing the distinctive characteristics of the keris itself. In creating this animation, the author, who also acts as the animation designer, used Clip Studio Paint software to create visual assets for the animation, then converted it to GIF format using the Procreate appliacation, and finally imaged it in AR form using a software called Adobe Aero. The result of this series of processes is a QR code that can be scanned with a smart phone which will display a short animation of the keris itself in AR form. But, note that the audiences must first download Adobe Aero on their smart phone to watch the animation

This study explores community-based revitalization strategies for Tingkilan music in Kutai Kartanegara, East Kalimantan, through the lens of applied ethnomusicology. Tingkilan, a traditional musical form central to Kutai identity, is facing challenges in maintaining its relevance in modern society. The research focuses on the Olah Gubang Division’s innovative efforts as a model for community-led preservation and adaptation.Using qualitative methods participant observation, ethnographic interviews, and musical analysis the study examines how local communities engage in cultural preservation while creatively adapting Tingkilan. It highlights the dual character of Tingkilan in Tenggarong: traditional forms that uphold communal and spiritual values, and contemporary versions that integrate modern instruments and popular genres. A key focus is the Olah Gubang Division’s arrangements, which blend Tingkilan’s traditional modal structure (D-E-F#-G-A-B-C#-D) with elements from pop and keroncong. Through analysis of works like “Perlipur Lara,” the study shows how these adaptations maintain core musical identity while appealing to younger audiences. Two main drivers of transformation are identified: internal needs to shorten performances for modern contexts, and external pressures from globalization and technological change. The findings demonstrate how applied ethnomusicology can support culturally grounded yet socially relevant preservation strategies. Ultimately, the study argues that sustainable revitalization depends on community ownership, strategic innovation, and the retention of cultural values. It offers a replicable model for other how academic research can empower local cultural efforts and ensure the vitality of endangered musical traditions in contemporary settings

    No full text
This study explores the cultural and educational significance of Nandong Smong, a traditional oral literature form from Simeulue Island, Indonesia, which functions as both a disaster narrative and a medium of intergenerational knowledge transfer. The objective of this research is to analyze the lyrical content and sociocultural meaning embedded in the Smong song to understand its role in tsunami preparedness and collective memory among Simeulue communities. The study employed a qualitative approach, with data collected through direct observation in Simeulue and in-depth interviews with several local elders, who were asked to interpret the meanings and messages of the Smong lyrics. These primary data sources were supported by secondary data obtained from YouTube, where Smong songs were transcribed and examined word-by-word for textual analysis. The results reveal that Nandong Smong is not merely an artistic expression but a crucial oral tradition rooted in the island’s historical experience of the 1907 tsunami. The lyrics contain warnings, survival strategies, and moral teachings that emphasize local wisdom, memory, and collective responsibility. Furthermore, the discussion highlights the effectiveness of oral literature in shaping communal resilience and transmitting indigenous knowledge through non-formal education. The conclusion emphasizes the need to preserve Nandong Smong as both an intangible cultural heritage and an alternative model for disaster education. This research implies that integrating local narratives into disaster risk reduction strategies may enhance community preparedness in disaster-prone areas. Therefore, it is recommended that policymakers and educators consider incorporating oral traditions such as Nandong Smong into formal educational curricula and community-based disaster awareness programs
