Struggles Around Transgenderism in Hungarian Feminism: An Autoethnographic Account

    Get PDF
In this autoethnography, I am using my personal experiences as data to examine the inextricable personal, political, social, and cultural aspects of one of the most decisive ruptures in Hungarian “progressive” activism of the second half of the 2010s. In the mid-2010s, I was part of an informal collective of women that started to outline a feminist approach critical of mainstream individualistic renditions of women’s rights as social progress, thereby diverging fundamentally from the country’s institutionalised feminism. As I and the circle of women I worked with focused on women’s reproductive autonomy, we encountered central feminist questions about sex and “gender” and soon faced serious backlash from political networks that felt their agenda threatened by our approach. Even though we did not intend to deal with the question of transgenderism, this question became the issue along which the feminist scene came to be divided. Through my experiences, I examine the role of institutions, the combative style of mainstream gender activists, and the co-optation strategies that eventually absorbed and defused the critique of “gender identity.” From this wider perspective, I look at how I made sense of the events, the scene, and its actors, as well as my own possible “place” in the processes

A Reconstruction of Gender: Implications of Social Construct and Gender Structure Theories

    Get PDF
The relationship between gender and social construction has long been discussed in feminist and gender studies scholarship. However, the current discussion on gender has run up against a blockage of misapplication of social construct theory. To untangle this blockage, my analysis applies the philosophy of social construction as explained by Ian Hacking in his 1999 book The Social Construction of What? and the framework of gender as a social structure as put forth by feminist sociologist Barbara Risman since the early 2000s. I apply these frameworks to elucidate better the logical implications that follow from a social construct thesis about gender. I clarify what it means to make a social construct thesis about gender in terms of the non-inherentness of gender associations and explain what it might entail for future discussion in the field of Women’s and Gender Studies

Grieving & Swiping: Online Dating as Consumers\u27 Post-Breakup Resolution

    Get PDF
This study explores the underlying motivations of consumers’ usage of online dating applications after the breakup of romantic relationships. The experiences of young-adult consumers who went through post-breakup grief are investigated through in-depth interviews. Findings resulted in twelve categories of motivations that participating consumers had regarding their usage of dating apps, in relation to managing the grief after breakup. Motivations are grouped under the categories of coping, updating, and desiring. Moreover, findings also demonstrated diverging pathways in using dating apps for emotional resolution. The study contributes to our understanding of dating app usage by highlighting important insights from consumers who benefitted from these apps to manage their post-breakup grief. Furthermore, we suggest managerial implications for the online dating application industry drawing from the link between romantic breakups and dating app usage to design marketing strategies that can better relate to shifting consumer expectations
