Roll for Communitas: Examining Intersections of Ritual and Play in Dungeons & Dragons
In the tabletop role-playing game Dungeons & Dragons, players have the freedom to be whoever they want and do whatever they want. Although most definitely a game, Dungeons & Dragons also exhibits characteristics suggestive of a ritual. This study examines how intersections of ritual and play (“ritualized play”) manifest within the context of Dungeons & Dragons. In testing Matan Shapiro’s theory of “ritualized play” (that play experiences and ritual experiences can be enacted within the same event), I argue that this concept applies to Dungeons & Dragons. Through engagement in a ritualized play space, D&D players yield rewards of both play and ritual, namely the ability to reject/subvert the social order, the ability to ratify/uphold the social order, and a sense of communitas. However, rituals aren’t always enacted perfectly, threatening the “ritual” aspect of Dungeons & Dragons, and resulting in a failure to produce the rewards promised
A Culutre of Schoolwork and Music
While still in the midst of their study abroad experiences, students at Linfield University write reflective essays. Their essays address issues of cultural similarity and difference, compare lifestyles, mores, norms, and habits between their host countries and home, and examine changes in perceptions about their host countries and the United States. In this essay, Abigael LaBuhn describes observations during their study abroad program at the National University of Ireland in Galway

Modeled With Coding, the Relationship Between Interior and Exterior Golf Ball Design and Horizontal Distance Traveled
This study focuses on the design of a golf ball, and how each variation of golf ball plays a role in the projectile motion. External factors are based around the aerodynamics of a golf ball, the design of dimples allows a different drag force compared to a smooth ball. The internal aspect compares different materials that make up the golf ball. Also comparing the different number of layers of these said materials will provide clarity into how the golf ball moves from a physics standpoint. Finally, a Python code will provide the projectile model of motion of a golf ball after it connects with the golf club
Thickness Determination of Hexagonal Boron Nitride by Color
This research discusses the methods to produce a model that can use color to optically determine broad range thicknesses of boron nitride flakes. Quick identification by color vastly outperforms the speed of the AFM scans that are typically used to measure thickness of boron nitride, with the limitation of broader range estimates of step height. Through the interpretation of RGB color resulting from differences in optical contrast between BN and the SiO2 substrate on which the flakes are resting, relationships are identified to predict thickness of BN present

Relationship Of the Number of Graphene Layers and Its Adhesion Value
Two-dimensional materials such as graphene have become leading topics of research for scientists everywhere. Its remarkable properties have sparked intense research interest across various disciplines, ranging from materials science and physics to electronics and energy. As one of the thinnest, strongest, and most conductive materials known to humanity, graphene holds immense promise for revolutionizing numerous technological applications, and these applications are growing every day. With the numerous applications of this material the need for knowing exactly how many layers you have is growing. Using an adhesion value and a known thickness range the number of layers of graphene should correlate giving a quick an easy measurement to know the exact number of layers
