A SYSTEMATIC REVIEW OF THE EFFECTS OF DEPRESSION ON ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE IN HISPANIC COLLEGE STUDENTS
This research project proposal looked at the impact of depression on the academic achievement of Hispanic college students in the United States. Depression is a significant mental health disorder, as it affects emerging adults, particularly college students trying to find their way and understand the academic and social challenges that come along with attending college. Research in the past has established a strong relationship between depression and a decrease in academic performance. However, there have been a limited amount of studies addressing this correlation between mental health and academic performance among Hispanic college students, a growing demographic within higher education. Common stressors experienced by the Hispanic college student population such as cultural expectations, perceived discrimination, racial bias, and socioeconomic challenges, can lead to depressive symptoms being exacerbated thus negatively affecting academic success. This research project proposal would aim to fill gaps in the existing literature by exploring deeper into how depression affects Hispanic students’ academic success while taking into consideration the intersectional identities and cultural influences of Hispanic college students. This research project\u27s findings could help highlight the need for culturally competent mental health interventions and resources that could help create a more inclusive and supportive education environment for Hispanic college students
EVALUATION OF THE IMPLEMENTATION OF FOSTER YOUTH INDEPENDENT LIVING PROGRAMS IN THE STATE OF CALIFORNIA
Foster youth transitioning into adulthood often confront a myriad of challenges stemming from limited social capital and unstable support systems. The transition out of foster care, particularly for Transitional Age Youth (TAY), is fraught with barriers including disconnection from familial ties, inadequate knowledge regarding higher education, financial instability, unemployment, and housing insecurity. In 2021, approximately 4,920 foster children aged out of the system, facing the option to participate in extended care programs designed to facilitate their transition into independent living. Despite these programs, many youths struggle to achieve self-sufficiency. Key legislation, including the Child Abuse Prevention and Treatment Act, and the Chafee Foster Care Independence Act, which established frameworks for support services tailored to the needs of TAY.
The theoretical frameworks guiding this research include trauma-informed and ecological systems theories, highlighting the need for a nuanced understanding of the trauma experienced by foster youth and the influence of various environmental systems on their development. This study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of Independent Living Programs (ILPs) in California, identifying strengths and weaknesses within these services and their impact on the transition to independent living for former foster youth. Additionally, this research seeks to contribute valuable insights that could inform policy and practice, ultimately enhancing support for this vulnerable population
SOURCES OF FOSTER PARENTS’ CONFUSION IN THE CHILD WELFARE SYSTEM
Background: Foster parents are a critical part of the child welfare system responsible for half the children in the child welfare. Despite this a literature gap exists when it comes to understanding foster parent experiences with the child welfare system that serves them. Objective: The aim of this proposal is to create a study that attempts to understand what areas of the child welfare system are confusing to foster parents. For the purposes of the study the child welfare system will be broken down into three parts: Foster family agencies, the dependency court system, and county child welfare agencies. Method: In the proposed study, foster parents recruited through social media would undergo qualitative interviews about their experience with the various aspects of the child welfare system. Afterwards Interviews will be transcribed by the researcher for any relevant themes
THE OUTCOMES OF SCHOOL-BASED MENTAL HEALTH SERVICES AT A SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA SCHOOL DISTRICT A PROPOSED PILOT STUDY
In this proposed project we intend to explore and identify empirical evidence-based research on outcomes of school-based mental health provided by a Southern California school district. This study will highlight evidence-based research on the growing concern for school-based mental health. A relevant extraction tool that can be utilized for further research, and a study design to explore existing literature regarding programs and student participation to gauge outcomes.
School-based mental health supports mental well-being and promotes positive protective factors. These include social and cultural connections, resilience, coping strategies, problem-solving abilities, positive development, and a supportive school environment where students feel safe. The shortage of school-based mental health programs results in school-aged children having inadequate access to these essential services. This paper will explore the outcomes of relevant studies and identify the gaps in the literature for future researchers to build upon
ON LEGISLATING CYBERCRIME: NIGERIAN, SOUTH AFRICAN, AND UNITED KINGDOM PERSPECTIVES
Cybercrime has evolved to be a menacing challenge to all the countries of the globe. Consequently, it has become necessary for effective laws and policies to be enacted and implemented globally. This paper aims to review the cybercrime legislation of three jurisdictions: Nigeria, South Africa, and the United Kingdom (UK), to examine how each country has conceptualised and legislated cybercrime. The paper begins with a discussion on the definitional considerations necessary for legislating cybercrime. It draws from the Council of Europe Convention on Cybercrime (Budapest Convention) as the primary international convention on cybercrimes, to analyse some of the specific provisions in the laws of the respective countries. It then proceeds to unpack some of the specific provisions in the respective laws and discusses the offence relating to cyberforgery. It considers the offence from a different perspective in each jurisdiction. It examines the crime of cyberforgery by laying the descriptive foundation of the cybercrime in the South African Cybercrimes Act; then briefly considers the role of data insecurity from the UK perspective and finally comments on the challenge it poses for e-commerce from a Nigerian lens. Ultimately, the findings reveal that each country has unique strengths and weaknesses, resulting in varied experiences of cybercrime
THE CHARACTERISTICS OF STUDENTS WITH BODY IMAGE DISSATISFACTION IN A SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA SCHOOL DISTRICT
Body image dissatisfaction is an increasingly common issue among children and adolescents, often stemming from various factors such as peer influences, family dynamics, media exposure, and extracurricular activities. This dissatisfaction can have significant long-term effects on youths\u27 mental health, including the development of depression, anxiety, low self-esteem, and eating disorders.
This proposed exploratory study aims to develop a new instrument by synthesizing insights from existing literature. A scoping literature review was chosen as the most appropriate method, as it allows for a comprehensive examination of available research on body image dissatisfaction. This research proposal seeks to fill a gap in the understanding of body image concerns among students in a local school district. Currently, many local districts pose only a single question about body image in their biopsychosocial assessments. This study proposes the creation of a more thorough screening tool for use in the Mental and Behavioral Health Departments during the biopsychosocial assessment process. The goal is to improve intervention strategies by better identifying and addressing body image concerns among children and adolescents
LGBTQ+ LATINO YOUTH AND MINIMIZING ELEMENTS LEADING TO SUICIDAL IDEATION
The proposed project makes every effort to affirm if whether implementing forward thinking practices of inclusive LGBTQ+ interventions in schools, prevent or minimize suicidal ideation in Latino youth. Although there is some literature regarding interventions in suicidality, there is not enough research to affirm how the intersectionality in double minorities might benefit by implementing inclusive practices for youth to learn and feel accepted, safe and empowered in schools. This project utilizes a qualitative design methodology that focuses on selected peer reviewed literature files from 2015 - 2024. The searched files included demographics such as ethnicity, identity, geographic locations of schools, and the dates studies were conducted. The findings of this proposed study would allow us to have a thorough understanding of the current research on this topic and identify gaps for future work
DIGITAL TECHNOLOGY IMPACT ON ADOLESCENCE EMOTIONS AND COGNITION
This research proposal aims to identify evidence-based research that explores the impact of technology on adolescents’ social emotional regulation (SER). This study will explore the components associated with social emotional learning and regulation such as self-esteem, social relationships, and decision-making and the way they are impacted by technology usage in adolescence. This study will also identify the implications of its finding at the micro, macro, and mezzo level of social work and provide treatment suggestions regarding the impact of technology on each component of SER.
SER is defined as skills that are utilized to control one’s emotions, thoughts, and physiological sensations to respond to certain situations in the appropriate manner. The development of such skills may be greatly impacted during the adolescent phase of development
