5小樽商大30年の思い出永 原 和 夫小樽=商科大学に私が着任 したのは,1967年4月のことです。そのまえの年の寒い冬の日,当 時の学長実方正雄先生が私の前任校である奈良の帝塚山大学にご挨拶に来て くださり,駆 け出 しの英語教師が激 しく高揚 したことをいまで もはっきり覚 えています。小樽商大にはマ ッキンノン,リ チャアー ド・ス トーリ,速川浩,木 曽栄作,清 水春雄,太 田朗,宇 賀治正朋,北 市陽一,飛田茂雄先生 と続 く輝かしい英語教育の伝統 と実績があ ります。その末席に加えていただ く名誉 と責任の大 きさに身震いした ものでした。それから停年退官 までの30年間につらいこと,不愉快な こともあ り,また,講義がマンネ リ化 して他へ移ろうか と考 え,実際,そ のような誘いを受けたことが何度かありました。その度に私を思い とどまらせ,新 たな出発を促 して くれたのは,い つも学生諸君の励 ましと,商大か ら英語の伝統 を絶や してはならない とい う使命感 のようなものだったと思います。学会に出席するときは否応なしに小樽商大の英語の伝統を背負わされました し,市民団体の会議ではいつも商大の英語教師 として発言を求 められ ました。なが く務めた入試委員会の席でも私のなかには常に 「北の外国語大学」のイメージがありました。商業教員養成課程 に英語 ・英文学のゼミを作 ってもらった ときも,私 は全 く矛盾を感 じませんでした。伊藤整,小 林多喜二は別格 としても,北海道の高校英語教育界に優秀な教師を数多 く送 り出してきた大学です。いわゆる空単位 を5,60単位 も取って,苦労ばか り多 く,恵まれているとは言い難い中 ・高校の英語教師になろうという変わ り者たちのために,少 しで も役に立てれぼと思ったのです。いまでは毎年12,3人の学生が教職に就 くようにな りましたが,北 海道の教員採用の割合か らいって,こ れは大変な数です。彼 らが年に一度母校に戻 り,日頃の研究成果を発表し,教6 人 文 研 究 第95輯育情報 を交換する小樽商科大学教職研究会は,今年で10回目になります。卒業生 と在校生 とを繋 ぐこの会の重要性はい くら強調 して も足 りません。1991年の短期大学部改組の とき,省令施設 として言語センターがで きると考えた人が何人いたろう。6外国語各12単位オファー といういまでは考 えられない構想 が教授会で承認 され,ド イツ語教官2名,フ ランス語 と中国語の教官各1名,そ れに外国人教師(英 語)1名 と文部技官1名 が新たに配置 されて,全 国有数の言語センターが発足 しました。小樽商大の外国語教育の伝統の力がなけれぼできなかったことです。当初の計画 は私の後を継いでセンター長になられた江 口修教授のご尽力でそのほとんどが完成 しました。いよいよその真価を発揮するときです。国際交流については,人 ない,物 ない,金 ないのないないづ くしのなかで「交換提携校10大学,留学生50人計画」を藤井栄一元学長や船津秀樹教授 と熱っぽく話 し合ってから11年が過ぎ,英語で講義 をす る短期交換留学制度ができるまでに成長 しました。大学の教育 ・研究に不可欠な国際交流の仕事に少しで もお手伝いできたことを喜び といたします。いろいろ助けて くださった諸先生,職 員の方々に心か らお礼 を申し上げるとともに,本学の国際交流活動が,国 際交流センターを中心 にますます発展するよう祈 ります。30年も経ちますと楽しかったことしか思い出さないのですが,そのひ とつが海外研修です。大学院の ときから勉強 してきたジェイムズ ・ジョイスに関するハ リー・レヴィンの著書 を,飛 田先生のご尽力で,1978年に北星堂か ら翻訳 して もなお,こ の難物 とどうつき合っていけばよいのか思いあぐねていたときに,在外研修の機会 を与えられ,世 界有数のジョイス ・コレクションを持つニューヨーク州立大学バ ッファロー校へ行 き,困 ったときには一次資料に当たればよいのだということを学びました。一次資料には有無を言わせぬ力があるものです。あの時ジョイスに沈潜 していなければ,トム・コノリー,マーク ・シェックナー,レ ス リー ・フィー ドラー等の教えを受 けていなければ,そ の後の日本アイルランド文学会やジョイス協会での私の仕事はなかったろうと思います。アカデ ミックな人たちだけでな く実に多 くの友人に恵ま小樽商大30年の思い出 7れ,バ ッファローで過 ごした2年 間は,小 樽商大からいただいた最大の贈物のひとつです。授業では,一般英語の他 に英文学史 と英文学概論,教 職ゼ ミを担当していましたが,い つも文学作品を読 んでいたような気がします。教室でテキス トを読むのは,真剣勝負をするようなもので,少 しでも気を抜 くと必ず手痛いしっぺ返しを受 けます。 ことぼの形態 と文化に触れなが ら学生の知性 と想像力を刺激するつもりでいて,ど れだけ学生に教 えられ,発 見があったかわかりません。商大生 も年々変わ りはしましたが,す べて掛け値なしにいい学生です。停年 に際し,私 は 「モダニズムの文学 について」と題して最終講義をさせていただき,山 田家正学長の有 り難いお言葉をはじめ,教職員の方々,学 生諸君から抱えきれないほどの花束を頂戴 し,教 師冥利 に尽 きる思いをいたしました。万感の想いをこめてお礼申し上 げます。これからの外国語教育はますます実践的語学力が要求されるでしょう。文学など入る隙間がな くなるかもしれない。しかし,言語 は社会の約束であり,文化です。いかに運転技術が達者でもルール とマナーを守る心がなければ,他人に迷惑をかけるだけでな く,運転者 自身が 自滅 します。国際社会でいま日本に求められているのは,相 手国のルール とマナーを十分に理解 し,自説を正 しく伝えられる真の国際人です。「実用 と文化 との調和の上 に立つ外国語教育の研究 と実践」 という言語センターが掲げた目的に向かって着実に進 まれることを祈念 してやみません。最後 になりましたが,浅 学非才な私のために 『人文研究』が特集号を組んで くださった ことは,望外の喜びです。これを励みに今後 ともジェイムズ ・ジョイス研究に少 しで も貢献できるような仕事を続 けていく所存です。編集にあたられた先生,この号に執筆 くださった諸先生に深 く感謝申し上 げます。
