THE EFFECT OF THINK-PAIR-SHARE (TPS) STRATEGY TO IMPROVE STUDENTS’ SPEAKING ABILITY AT THE SECOND YEAR OF ISLAMIC BOARDING SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL BAHRUL ‘ULUM PERHENTIAN RAJA DISTRICT OF KAMPAR REGENCY
Think-Pair-Share (TPS) strategyhelps students get ideas and discuss their
ideas with each other to improve their speaking ability. This strategy gives chance
to the students to think, to answer, and to help with each other. Based on the
preliminary research at the Second Year Students of Islamic Boarding Senior
High School Bahrul ‘UlumPerhentian Raja District of Kampar Regency, the
writer found that the students’ speaking ability is still low. Thus, the writer is
interested in carrying out this research. There are two formulations of the
problem in this research, they are:
a. How is the use of Think-Pair-Share Strategy to improve students’
speaking ability?
b. Is there any significant effect of Think-Pair-Share Strategy to improve
students’ speaking ability?
The subjects of this research are the teacher andthe second year students of
Islamic Boarding Senior High School Bahrul ‘UlumPerhentian Raja District of
Kampar Regency in 2010/2011 academic year.The objects of this research are the
use of Think-Pair-Share strategy to improve students’ speaking ability and the
effect of Think-Pair-Share strategy to improve students’ speaking ability. The
techniques of collecting data used in this research are observation and oral
presentation test. There are two variables that are operated in this research:
variable X is Think-Pair-Share strategy, and variable Y is students’ speaking
ability. The data were analyzed by using SPSS computer program with
Independent Samples T-Test formula.
Based on the observation, it was obtained that the result of observation of
the use of Think-Pair-Share strategy is that 100% of the indicators were done by
the writer. It is categorized very good. Then based on the data analysis, the total
post-test score of the experimental class is 1126 and the mean score is 66.2. While
the total post-test score of the control class is 1036 and the mean score is
60.9.Therefore, the students’ speaking score at the experimental class is higher
than the students’ at the control class.
After analyzing the data by using SPSS computer program, it was found
that tobservationis 3.310, which is greater thanttableat 5% (2.04) and 1% (2.75) level of
significance. It can be concluded that 2.04 2.75. It means that null
hypothesis (Ho) is rejected, while the alternative hypothesis (Ha) is accepted.
Thus, there is significant effect of think-pair-share strategy to improve students’
speaking ability at the second year of Islamic Boarding Senior High School
Bahrul ‘UlumPerhentian Raja District of Kampar Regency
THE IMPLEMENTATION OF BRAINSTORMING IN TEACHING ENGLISH AT THE FIRST YEAR OF SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL 12 PEKANBARU
The research’s purpose is to explain and describe the implementation of
brainstorming in teaching English at the First Year of Senior High School level.
This research was held at the First Year of Senior High School 12 Pekanbaru.
There were three English teachers who had participated as the informants. To
collect the data from the informants, the researcher used the technique of
interview and observation. Instrument of interview was used to collect detailed
qualitative data expressed in the respondent’s own words in order to describe the
implementation of brainstorming in teaching English at the first year of Senior
High School 12 Pekanbaru. Then, instrument of observation was used to
crosscheck the interview result. Both instruments obtained the data in the form of
verbal or non-numerical (qualitative data). The obtained data from the observation
and interviews had analyzed by interpretive techniques.
The result of this research showed that the activities of English teachers in
the implementation of brainstorming at the First Year of Senior High School 12
Pekanbaru were varies. However, the researcher found and identified some
common ways in the implementation of brainstorming. The ways were in the
beginning, teachers explained the objective of brainstorming. Then, teachers used
various activities to brainstorm students’ ideas (e.g. word map, making list of
words, etc.). Commonly, teachers recorded students’ responses on the board.
Teachers established a short time limit (e.g. 5-10 minutes). Teachers did not judge
on students ideas in order to gain as many as students’ ideas. At the end, teachers
announce the topic of the lesson.
Based on the result of this research, it is suggested for both teachers and
students to pay much more attention to the ways of developing various
brainstorming activities with the students. For English teachers of other schools
who do not yet use brainstorming or use it only partially are suggested to try or
expand its use
THE CONTRIBUTION OF COLLABORATIVE STRATEGY READING TOWARD THE SECOND YEAR STUDENT’S READING COMPREHENSION AT MA AL- KAUTSAR BOARDING SCHOOL
There are some reasons why the students are hard to get information from
reading text. First, there are some difficult words that the students found. They do not
know the meaning. In other words, the students have limited vocabulary. The
students are hesitant to remember new words, because they often get bored with it.
Second, the teachers do not use a suitable reading strategy to solve the problem. It
influences on the students reading comprehension. Third, there is a limited time that
the teacher and students have to learn reading text, so, comprehending a reading text
becomes more complicated for the students.
The subject of the research is the all second year students of MA Al-Kautsar
Boarding School, and the object is students’ reading comprehension, there are five
classes, which comprise of 150 students. Because the number of population was
relatively big, the writer uses randomization technique to see equal competency from
the student, after implementing try out, the writer has 60 students as homogeneity
sample, by flapping a coin, one group was randomly chosen as experimental group
and other control group. There are two variables which are operated in this research,
variables X: experiment class and control class and variable Y: students’ reading
comprehension. The data analysis was analysis by using formula “independent
sample T-test.

Based on the data analysis, the writer concludes that: the mean of students
who are taught by using Collaborative Strategic Reading (CSR) or experimental
group is 23.97, while the mean of students Control group without using Collaborative
Strategic Reading (CSR) is 5. The standard deviation of the students who are taught
by using Collaborative Strategic Reading (CSR) is 1.77 and the standard deviation of
the students without using Collaborative Strategic Reading (CSR) is 3.03. And the
Tcalculation is 8.66. Because of the Tcalculation is higher than Ttable, so, the significant is
6.66.. The hypothesis calculation, the calculated is 9.31 by using t-table at the 05
level of significant and 60 degree of freedom 58 resulted in a figure is 2.00. Since the
t-calculated is bigger than t-table, the null hypothesis (Ho) is rejected. Consequently
the alternative hypothesis is accepted. It means that the use of collaborative strategic
reading is able to help the students’ reading comprehension
THE CORRELATION BETWEEN STUDENTS’ LEARNING MOTIVATION AND THEIR READING COMPREHENSION AT THE SECOND YEAR STUDENTS OF MADRASAH ALIYAH KAMPAR TIMUR
This research is known there is any significantly positive correlation between
students learning motivation and their reading comprehension at the second year of
Madrasah Aliyah Kampar Timur. This study is correlation research. It is two
variables; the location and the time of the research were conducted at Madrasah
Aliyah Kampar Timur, especially at the second year students from May to August
2010. The subject of this research is the second year students of Madrasah Aliyah
Kampar Timur and objects of this research are students learning motivation and their
reading comprehension. The population is small therefore the writer took all the
population as sample. So, the population of the research is 64 students.
To get the data in this research, the writer used two techniques called
Questioner and test. In the questionnaire consisted of 20 items. While, test consisted
50 questions. To get the data the writer user the formula:

Finally the writer get the result of research that the writer can conclude that
there is significantly positive correlation between learning motivation and reading
comprehension. Because the score obtained (0,513)is compared to the r table of
product moment, where at level 5% is 0,250 and 1% is 0,325%, the score obtained is
bigger than r table either at level 5% and 1%. It can be formulated as 0, 250<0,
513>0,325. It means that the alternative hypothesis (Ha) is accepted and the null
hypothesis (Ho) is rejected. In other word, it can be seen that reading comprehension
might be caused by their learning motivation
The Effect of Using Choral Reading Method on Students’ Reading Comprehension and Their Vocabulary Mastery At Islamic Junior High School of Islamic Boarding School Technology of Riau Pekanbaru
This research was aimed to find out whether there was a significant effect of using
Choral Reading Method on students’ reading comprehension understanding and
their vocabulary mastery at Islamic Junior High School of BoardingSchool
Technology of Pekanbaru. This research was a Quasi-Experimental research. The
subject of the research was the students of class VIII at Islamic Junior High
School BoardingSchool Technology Pekanbaru, involving two classes: 1
experiment class and 1 control class. The samples in this research were 40
students taken from 102 population. In collecting the data, the researcher used
test, questionnaire, and observation, then they were analyzed by independent
Statistic Sample t-test and paired sample t-test by using Effect Size Formula.
Finally, the researcher found that the significant scores were 0.000 and 0.000
which were smaller than p (0.005). It means that there was a significant effect of
using Choral Reading Method toward students’ reading comprehension
understanding and their vocabulary in the pretest and posttest in experiment class.
Besides that, the score of eta square was 0.88 and 0.84. In other words, there was
a significant effect of using Choral Reading Method toward students’ reading
comprehension understanding and their vocabulary mastery on the narrative text,
and the effect was categorized as a medium effect. The conclusion was that
Choral Reading Method could be applied to the learning of reading and
vocabulary mastery at Islamic Junior High School of BoardingSchool Technology
of Pekanbaru

THE EFFECT OF USING ELICITATION TECHNIQUE ON STUDENTS’ SPEAKING ABILITY AT THE SECOND YEAR OF STATE SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL 01 SENTAJO RAYA KUANTAN SINGINGI REGENCY
Based on School Based Curriculum (SBC), speaking is one of the English
language skills that must be taught and learned in Senior High School. State
Senior High School 01 Sentajo Raya Kuantan Singingi Regency is a school which
uses SBC as the curriculum in the teaching and learning process. After doing
observation in this school, the researcher found that the students still had
difficulties in speaking English. The students were difficult to communicate their
ideas in English. In this case, the teacher was expected to find a good method in
order to give a good contribution to increase students’ ability in speaking English
by applying elicitation technique as a replacement of previous technique used by
teacher which were Total Physical Response and 2 cycle 4 stages.
This research aimed at finding out whether there was a significant effect of
using elicitation technique on speaking ability of the students at Senior High
School 01 Sentajo Raya Kuantan Singingi Regency. It consisted of two variables,
those were the use of elicitation technique was as an independent variable or
variable X and students’ speaking ability was as a dependent variable or variable
Y. The design of this research was quasi - experimental research. In analyzing the
data, the writer used statistical analysis which used SPSS 17.0 computer program.
It was obtained that tobserved was higher than ttable. It means null hypothesis (H0) is
rejected, and alternative hypothesis (Ha) is accepted. It could be stated that 2.02 <
5.676 > 2.72. In conclusion, there is a significant effect of using elicitation
tecnique on the students’ speaking ability at State Senior High School Sentajo
Raya Kuantan Singingi Regenc
PENGARUH PENERAPAN MODEL PEMBELAJARAN KOOPERATIF TIPE GROUP INVESTIGATION TERHADAP PEMAHAMAN KONSEP MATEMATIS DITINJAU BERDASARKAN KEMANDIRIAN BELAJAR SISWA SEKOLAH MENENGAH PERTAMA DI PEKANBARU
Penelitian ini dilatar belakangi oleh rendahnya pemahaman konsep
matematis siswa dan belum dilaksanakannya model pembelajaran kooperatif tipe
group investiation di SMP Negeri 40 Pekanbaru. Tujuan dalam penelitian ini
adalah untuk mengetahui pengaruh pemahaman konsep siswa yan menggunakan
model pembelajaran kooperatif tipe group investigation dengan siswa yang
belajar menggunakan pembelajaran langsung jika ditinjau berdasarkan
kemandirian belajar pada siswa SMP Negeri 40 Pekanbaru. Penelitian ini
merupakan penelitian Quasi Eksperimen dan desain yang digunakan adalah
Posttest-Only Control Design. Populasi dalam penelitian ini adalah seluruh siswa
SMP Negeri 40 Pekanbaru, dengan sampel siswa kelas VII-B dan VII-D. Teknik
sampling yang digunakan adalah purposive sampling. Instrumen yang digunakan
adalah angket untuk mengukur kemandirian belajar dan tes uraian untuk
mengukur pemahaman konsep matematis siswa. Teknik analisis data yang
digunakan peneliti yaitu uji-T dan ANOVA dua arah. Berdasarkan hasil penelitian
dapat disimpulkan bahwa: 1) Terdapat perbedaan pemahaman konsep matematis
antara siswa yang belajar menggunakan model pembelajaran kooperatif tipe
group investigation dengan siswa yang belaja rmenggunakan pembelajaran
konvensional, 2) Tidak terdapat perbedaan pemahaman konsep matematis antara
siswa yang mengikuti pembelajaran dengan model pembelajaran kooperatif tipe
group investigation dengan pembelajaran langsung jika ditinjau dari kemandirian
belajar, 3) Tidak terdapat pengaruh interaksi antara model pembelajaran
kooperatif tipe group investigation yang ditinjau berdasarkan kemandirian belajar
terhadap pemahaman konsep matematis siswa. Secara umum, model pembelajaran
kooperatif tipe group investigation berpengaruh terhadap pemahaman konsep
matematis yang ditinjau berdasarkan kemandirian belajar pada siswa SMP Negeri
40 Pekanbaru.

THE CORRELATION BETWEEN STUDENTS’ READING INTEREST AND THEIR WRITING ABILITY AT TENTH GRADE OF STATE SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL 1 KAMPAR
The purpose of this study were to identify students’ reading interest and
students’ writing ability in descriptive text at tenth grade of State Senior High
School 1 Kampar. This research was correlational research. It was conducted to
find out the correlation between students’ reading interest and their writing ability
at tenth grade of State Senior High School 1 Kampar. In accordance with the
symptoms, the writer has seen some problems that should be discussed and
overcome, those are: some of the students read in their spare time but they still
faced difficulties to use appropriate vocabulary in writing, some other students
have a willingness to read but they still faced difficulties to express ideas in
writing, and some of the students read continuously but they still faced difficulties
in organizing ideas and sentences. The specific objective of this research was to
find out whether there is or no significant correlation between students’ reading
interest and their writing ability. The population of this research was the tenth
grade students which consisted of 8 classes. The total population of this research
was 288 students. Because the population was too large, so the reasearcher ufsed
simple random sampling technique to take the sample. Thus, the researcher took
44 students as the sample of this research. In collecting the data, the researcher
used questionnaire to measure students’ reading interest and writing test to
measure the students’ writing ability. The researcher analyzed the data by using
Pearson Product Moment formula of SPSS Version 16.0. Based on the results, it
was found that the mean score of students’ reading interest was 67.75 (good
level), while their writing ability was 65.66 (sufficient level). In terms of the
correlation between students’ reading interest and their writing ability, the
researcher found that sig. (2-tailed) < α = 0.000 < 0.005. Thus, the researcher
concluded that H0 was rejected and Ha was accepted. Moreover, the researcher
found that the value of correlation coefficient (r) was 0.850 which indicated that
there was a very strong positive correlation between the two variables. Based on
the research findings, it could be concluded that there was a significant correlation
between students’ reading interest and their writing ability at tenth grade of State
Senior High School 1 Kampar.
